mortal kombat 1 keeps freezing

So when I play the game it will sort of lock up and the screen goes black and blinks.  If I turn the machine off and then on it comes right back on without a problem.  As far as I know it doesn't have any problems with the roms.  I did put new terminals on the wires that go to the buttons and some of them are too small and I have them shoved on there.  If one of these is loose could it be a ground problem that is causing this?  I'm going to put mame in the cabinet but still a little ways away from it and would like the game to work until then.  It's revision 4.0

ran it through all the checks and the roms, dipswitches and sound board all check ok

wonder if you have awire loose causing a short of some sort.
