Minimum hardware needed
« on: October 21, 2008, 08:41:07 pm »
Hi guys,

Because of the fact that my neogeo mvs motherboard is (temporary I hope :P) dead, and because of the high prices of MVS games, I wanted to make my Neogeo cabinet to be a MAME cabinet. I already bought a JPAC interface, now the only thing that I need is a computer itself. But I was just wondering what the minimum specs would be to play let's say all 2D games at full speed. I heard that MAME does not use the videocard its power at all, so the only thing that really matters is CPU. But I see many youtube movies and screenshots of guys with front ends where they also have other emulators, like Nintendo 64, playstation and stuff. Does anybody know what hardware this would require? Because I'm doubting of what to choose, and I don't want to buy something and then discovering that it is too slow for what I want.

Thanks in advance :).
Kaas

In addition to this I have another question:

Does the PC need to be cooled with external air, meaning to modify the cab to get fans in it? I hope I am able to MAME it without any modification to the cab itself.

Depends on the cabinet, PC power and mounting location, but I'd say no as long as there is a lot of 'free air' inside your cab. If you are concerned, just de-case the PC and mount a couple of fans over the key parts that will lose performance with an increase in heat - ie. the CPU and graphics card.
