revolution x setup
« on: October 14, 2008, 01:44:19 am »
Probably a very stupid question, but is it possible to play this game without a light gun?  I don't quite have my cabinet ready for my pc so I've been playing mame with my xbox controller on my tv.  Anyways that I can configure the game to let me use my xbox controller to control the gun sights?

I'm not at home right now to try, but you should be able to load up the game and go to options, then "input (this game)" and change the "lightgun x analog" and "lightgun y analog" axis to the x and y axis on your controller.

You may have to set up mame to set the offscreen reload to a button if revolution x supports that... it has been a long time since I have played that game so I don't remember :)

RevX was not a lightgun but positional guns (analog controls).  I control it with a mouse (on computer) or the trackball (on the cab) and it works pretty well.

You can try the xbox's analog thumbstick for absolute position, but I'm pretty sure you won't like it.  The precision needed will probably higher than you can do on the thumbstick.  That leaves using the d-pad or analog stick for direction at constant speed control (which I don't like, but you might).

To do the absolute position control, start the game, tab, input (this game), AD Stick X Analog, enter, move thumbstick left or right, wait until mame takes it, repeat for AD Stick Y Analog and up/down.  make sure the same thumbstick is not mapped to the "...Inc" and "...Dec" ports.  (Repeat, "NOT")

To do the direction at constant speed control, it's almost the same as above, but map the d-pad or thumbstick to the "...Inc" and "...Dec" ports.  (which is why you make sure not to map these in the above.)

IMO, mouse, TB, or analog flightstick will give better control for revx, but ... some people love gamepads.

very true about the gamepads... I dont have my trackball installed yet, so i was playing a shooter yesterday with a regular mouse and it worked beautifully... i cant imagine trying to play with a gamepad
