Basement Arcade on HGTV tomorrow (6/15)
« on: June 15, 2003, 12:49:29 am »
Saw in my local paper that HGTV has a special on tomorrow night about "Ultimate Basements".  One segment is about a guy in Mass. who has an 80's arcade in has basement.  Thought it might be of interest to others (two of these basements are in my home town of Indianapolis).

Here is a link to information about the episode:

Hope you enjoy!

Picture 2 - Major Havoc for sure, next to it is? (I, Robot, Firefox, or Return of the Jedi?).

Picture 3, those two game rows are a bit too close together for comfort.

Pic 4, what is wrong with that screenshot?

Doesn't one of the Multi-Pac kits have an invisible ghosts game?  Perhaps that is what the screenshot is from?

I said invisible ghosts.  The game just got a lot harder, didn't it?   ;)

I might be wrong about the invisible ghosts being in a Multi-Pac, but I'm sure there is an invisible walls game in one of the Multi-Pac kits.

The version of pac-man that had disappearing walls once a power pellet was eaten was called "Pac-man After Dark"   Don't know the name of the version that had disappearing ghosts but I do remember playing it.

So.... did anyone watch it?

That egyptian guy was a little, er.. tapped... he must have inhaled too much plaster/dry wall dust in his day...

I was a little dissapointed in the arcade basement guy...  He doesn't even repair/fix his own games... which must be frequently with all those vectors n' stuff.  THe dedicated Major Havoc was pretty bad arse...

He's a lucky bastage I guess =P

bah!  I think when I get a game room/basement... I'll go 2-3 mame cabinets, 1 pinball, 1-2 must have classics, skee ball for the wife, and an mp3 juke of some sort.  *Shrug* (dreams on....)

That's a good idea - I'd be settling on some mame cabs and maybe 2-6 'must-haves'.

The arcade guy I thought would be a name I'd recognize from RGVAC, and have a huge electronic workshop.  Instead he pays others to do it.  *shrug*  I would add the arcade cliche carpeting, neon signs, weird lighting, go all out and make it an "arcade".

The egyption dude was definitely a little weird.  But the bar was awesome.  I would have like to seen more egytpian layout than just some abstract wall-art.

I think they ran out of basements if they had to do 2 for basketball/sports.  Whatever.

Coolest basement - the railroad.  I wouldn't want it in mine, but I think it would be cool to watch for an afternoon, especially the sessions they have.

Most dedicated DIY'er - the main street recreation basement.  Good grief that's intense.

Course, I don't even have a basement :)

Agreed on the bar

I dunno... I thought that the railroad would be neatest/fun to build/construct... but would be the least interesting once it was running. (and I thought I took my mame cabinet hobby too seriously... this guy installed an intercom to reach different "train stations" in his basement...)  *shrug* to each his own...

1) Guys who shop videogames, dont keep videogames...they shop them..they fix them..they sell them...to make MONEY...they usually aren't collectors.

2) Guys who can afford to BUY the refurbed video games, dont HAVE to repair them.....they can afford to have someone else repair them.

While I love the idea of having an "arcade", the fact is.....having all those dedicated cabs would get boring real fast.  I mean....I love the cab shapes,a nd the artwork, but seriously.....I wouldn't want to own that many 400lb pieces of wood.  When I'm done I'll have 2 uprights, a sit down and my coctail...I'll put up something in neon, some tacky artwork, throw down a blacklight-ready throwrug and there you go...instant arcade.... :)

Consider the fact that a lot of your electricity comes from us :)

Only problem with the Yeti is the smell.  Mine, anyway.
