PSOne Series H is a B@#%H to HACK!!!
« on: June 14, 2003, 10:55:54 pm »
Fang this Hack!!!

I was following thru what Armad was doing.  I got the connection layout and its clear as day...  De-cased the controller to hack, saw the ribbon right there blatantly as Armad described.  De-soldered the Ribbon out (not the one that is folded onto the back but the one up front, top to bottom).  The sixteen solder points are so farggin narrow, you can have the smallest hands in the world you won't be able to set yourself up to solder anything on these points, FREAKIN NARROW!!!  Hell, don't even think about soldering 18 or even 22 gauge wires on these solder points, they would be TOO THICK for it.  HTH do you solder anything on these solder points.  DAMN it was soooooo frustratingly difficult I am about to jump out of the balcony if my home has one.

AAARRRGGGGGGHHHHHHHH!!!!!!  **  pulling hair out  of frustration  and turning into the HULK  **

...Also here is another one I was trying to hack.  I get the connect/solder points for the UP, DON, LEFT, RIGHT.  But the other buttons has holes where the buttons were soldered from before but I could not identify which is ground and which is Normally Open...

I did note in my original post how the solder job was tight and that it's for advanced dudes only. I also can handle a PS2 mod so I guess I can deal with the tight solders. I use 15 wire cable to do my jobs and the wires are about 26 gauge so they work well for this job. You can also wire in the analog sticks (setting them digital) and the L3/R3 buttons pretty easily.

Here's some tips.

1) use 26 guage or smaller wire.

2) zip tie your wire down so that they don't move so much when working on the encoder board.

3) keep the tips of the wire to be soldered short so that there's less chance of shorting against another wire. Tin the tips then cut them shorter.

4) aim/alternate from the front to the back of each solder point so that there's more space between the bare wire tips.

I'd suggest de-soldering the other side of the ribbon cable (which goes to the button pcb).  Then actually *use* the ribbon cable (carefully cut the individual lines apart) and then solder the ends to larger wires.

This is what I am going to attempt with my h-series.  I guess you can't do that now that you already desoldered the wrong side off the pcb.  :-[

Yeah I realized that too - where the ribbon cable that is on the other end could be solder points to bigger cables.  Yeah next time I will try what you had suggested.  I might have better success.

armad - thx for the pointers, I have not given up on that PSOne board I SAC'ed.  Just looking for some 26 gauge wires now coz they are a ---smurfette--- to find also, heh!

Let me know if you need me to ship you about 18" of that 15 wire cable. You can have it for cheap plus shipping. It'll solve the problem I think...

You can also ship the board to me and pay me to do it for you.

I wouldn't say that this side of the ribon cable is the "wrong side." The finished product looks more clean and is more professional looking. In that sense it's the right side. It's just a very tight solder job. Then again, have you ever attempted to hack a PS2. You need to slip a razor blade between the prongs to prevent shorts, it's so tight. 30 guage wire is also needed for that job.

You know what armad - I will take you up on that offer on this particular instance.  Please email your terms and mailing address to me so I can send the board to you to finish the hack.  Just lemme know what your charge would be + the shipping back to me.  What do you say?

My email is evasyar@yahoo.com - pls let me know, thx! :P

no problem but your 7th point looks like the copper was ripped off of the PCB board. If it's dammaged it might be harder to fix or may require me to work with a new board.

yes you are correct john, part of the "green"contact path was "ripped" partly now and the copper was lifted off during de-solder task.

pls confirm for me then if you think the board is now fukked and unuseable.  I wouldn't want to waste your time with the board only to find you might end requiring to work with a fresh board instead of this one...

what do you think? ::)

Thats the point I was trying to make, you can avoid the tight solder job on the main pcb by NOT desoldering that side.  Desolder the other side that connects to the button PCB, splice the ribbon cable, and solder the ribbon cable ends to larger gague wire.  Sure its not going to look as professional as your job, but at least its possible for the average person to do!! Anyway, who is going to see it when its inside you cab  ;D.

Dave_K... point taken... well, I'm just the way I am. I'm just anal that way I guess...

I'll go straight to the chip and give it a shot. I'll try at no cost. If I can make it work then you can complete payment for me to ship back. I save the controller and everyone is happy.

it's the dualshock that comes with a PSOne or they cost $20 new in a box. It has the white plug that is a semi circle. Regular Dualshock and not the grey one or the Dualshock2.

turn it over, it says series H on there.
