Vertical Games, Amount Of Buttons??
« on: October 07, 2008, 10:56:49 am »
Are there any vertical Mame games that use more than a 3 button setup, i know there might be some SNK/Neo Geo based games that might?

2 buttons is plenty for vertical. There may be 1 or 2 games that use 3 or 4, but is it worth adding buttons for those unknown games you'll never even play anyways?

Super Punch-Out!! uses 4.  It's the only game I can think of that I like that I don't have enough buttons for.  I have a vertical 3 button setup and it's great.

There are no vertical Neo Geo games.

There are no vertical Neo Geo games.

but there are horizontal games that scroll vertically, like Aero Fighters , which I believe didnt use the NeoGeo D button

I know that, but that's a vertical shooter, not a vertical-oriented game.

I can't think of any games for Neo Geo (that aren't fighting games) that use all four.

I think the fact vertical shooters and most vertically-orientated games are so great is because the buttons are limited, keeping the gameplay simple. I'm not a massive player of classics or verly simple games, but I really enjoy things like the 1941 series of games as they are great in two-player too.

There are enough vert shooters that use the 3rd button for a special function that its worth having if you like that type of game.

romlister is your friend.

there are 226 games that are vertical and use 3 buttons. (many clones in that list)
There are 63 that use 4 buttons.

tutankham alone is worth a 3 button setup. :)

Yup, I prefer romlister to maws (deluxe search), but there's also maws.

There are quite a few that mame lists with more than 4.  Toobin has five, and is playable with a 3x2 grid.  Not sure about Daioh as I'm at work and can't test, but mame lists heavy barrel as with five buttons when it really used 2.  So some of the results might be false high.

Tutankham used 2 sticks and one button... Playable on any two player panel.

There is a shooter called Daioh that had 6 buttons. I played it a while back on the 3 button panel and didn't notice anything missing. Not sure what the deal was with that one. The KLOV pic does show it's CP with 6 buttons.

MAME and controls.dat have it as a 3 button, 4way stick: (even though it says 8way here)
Plays wonderfully as such too.

Code: [Select]
<player number="1" numButtons="3">

<control name="Misc">

<label name="P1_BUTTON2" value="Fire Right"/>
<label name="P1_BUTTON3" value="Flash"/>

<label name="P1_JOYSTICK_DOWN" value="Down"/>

Daioh had 3 shot buttons and 3 bomb buttons.  Total of six.

Yeah, I looked it up too and you're absolutely right that it used 2 sticks. (I played this all the time as a kid, but when I played it in MAME w/ 3 buttons it felt just as natural, although I still suck at it!)

Controls.dat is supposed to be 100% accurate and verified data only too.  That is really interesting that it got slipped in there.  Personally, I'm happy that it's wrong, as otherwise I would not have had it come up in my query and wouldn't have it on my machine right now.

Now I wonder how many other games like that could be played with 3 buttons instead of 2 sticks?

anyway, horse, flogged.

Sometimes there is more than one right answer.  I'll bet money down that it did both ways, either with a dipswitch, or parent vs clone/bootleg.  (think 1000 miles rally or cabal)

One of the limits of control.dat is it is mame.  Mame is saying tutankhm has 4 way sicks, one for player 1 and a second for cocktail, and three buttons per stick.  But that pic looks like a dual stick with three buttons (two yellow, one black)?  Anybody have a better pic, or best, pics of both CPs (if I'm right).

Its the one and two player start button and Flash, or whatever Tutankham called the "smart bomb" button.

What the .... ?  Tutankham doesn't use two joysticks .....

I've seen two-button versions of Tut. which use the first button for BOTH left and right fire.  But really, it should be three for left, right, out (err, smartbomb).

Every Tutankham machine I've ever seen has been the twin stick configuration in that picture. Never saw one with buttons.

Edit: Here is a pic of the game from the flyer. Has a better pic of panel that u_rebelscum was looking for.

Interesting.  The flyer says it "only shoots left or right"; so was that stick a 2-way?  Or a 4/8-way that only the left and right were wired?  IOW, should it be called a dual 4-way joystick setup, or was it a 4-way + 2-way joystick combo?

And since it shoots only left and right (regardless if the stick was 2, 4 or 8-way), I can easily see an official upgrade kit, or a bootleg kit, or operator hacks with buttons instead of a stick.  No need for dipswitches or any hacking the ROMs for it to work.  And from what Zebidee and mame, and TOK and NOP say, looks like both ways were out in the wild.  (so I was half right in my bet :P)

How controls.dat should handle cases like this... well (IMO)... If there was an official three button kit, both are completely correct and control.dats should account for it like it does dipswitch changeable inputs.  OTOH, if the 3 button was only on bootleg/hacked cabs, then the 3 buttons should be mentioned in the comments as a side note.  There still is the question of if the two joystick setup is dual 4-way controller or a 4-way + 2-way combo CP?

As for Mame, ehh.  It's unusual enough for mame to treat it however it wants.  (I wonder if there was an arguement about this when tut first was added?)

Toobin has five, and is playable with a 3x2 grid.

And Toobin is a great game. Didn't play it hardly at all as a teenager, but I've played it a lot with my son in the last couple of months. Works really well with 2 rows of 3 buttons (upper middle button unused). If I was otherwise thinking of only doing 3 buttons, this game would certainly tempt me to go with more.
My Collection: Mame cab, 38 dedicated vids, pin, skeeball, coin op air hockey table, Ice Cold Beer, Megatouch, 2 token machines, and payphone (VAPS, pics at Arcade Crusade)

Yup, great game.  I played it a lot with friends from high school.  It's one of the games that the friend from high school (that I still hang with sometimes) will stop and play if we see the machine at random location.  (I'll stop at a lot others too if I'm alone.)
