WTF - $22 PC Light Guns???
« on: October 06, 2008, 09:09:42 am »
I'm betting the limitation on these things is that you MUST use a PC monitor at 22Hz, but dang - at $22 per gun, I'm tempted to try it anyway:

That's a Chinese importer. unless you are ordering 10-20, Shipping will kill the deal. I also doubt that gun has 'on the fly' calibration.

That site has a ton of GunCon2 clones too.  Given the work I've put into making a reference implementation of the GunCon2, if I had the money to burn, I'd order 1 of each and do some serious testing. :)

I've started re-writing now that I'm more comfortable with bitwise operators, and I'm tempted to make a java-based SDL GunCon2 control driver, that way any SDL-based software on any platform would work, but time and such. :P

Retroblast did a Light Gun Shootout awhile back, however that article doesn't seem to exist anymore.

I can't remember how accurate they said this one was, but I do seem to recall them saying it only works with Windows95 (so 98 should be fine too).

I have seen some interesting looking guns on these Chinese sites, even one that looks a lot like ActLabs older VGA gun that they were selling for around $20 (but discontinued that one and now you can only get the one that costs around $100).  Doing the whole bank transfer thing for payment always made me shy away from buying one.  I just didn't like the hassle and extra fees, plus there could be import taxes on items like these too, but I can't say for sure on that.

These pop up on eBay now and then too.  It would be interesting to see if they will work with XP and how accurate they really are.

Well, if I could get a data stream from them, it wouldn't be too hard to get it working with linux.  The GunCon2 clones interest me more than this one, but if it weren't too bad getting the driver data from it, and if it actually worked with an arcade monitor, I might be inclined to change my mind. ;)

Here's the PS2 page:

http://www.goldenshop.com.hk/AI-trad/psx2hard/psx2_main.htm

Then here's some of the guns they have:

$19
http://www.goldenshop.com.hk/AI-trad/psx2hard/hcgun.htm

This one looks particularly cool, AND it has kickback!  $15:
http://www.goldenshop.com.hk/AI-trad/psx2hard/zforcegun.htm

Very simple handgun, $19:
http://www.goldenshop.com.hk/AI-trad/psx2hard/scorpion3.htm

There's several others on that page...I might import a pair of the zforce guns just for grins.  Put it on my Visa card, and if it doesn't come through, do a chargeback.  Simple enough.

I just sent them an e-mail inquiry on shipping prices.  I live in New York.  I chose a Airmail as the shipping method.

We'll see...

1) No accurate AT ALL

2) Very Poor O.S. compatibility  (definitely Not compatible with vista 64)

3) Just compatible with VGA on LOWER resolutions

Why do you think we love Topgun? For years we have ate a lot of crap and a lot  expensive lightguns

Best Regards

If I write above is because I own:

1) PC SUPER BIO GUN (The lightgun this topic is about)

2) PC VIRTUAL GUN

3) ACT LABS "TV OUT" Version

4) GUNCON-2  (Connected to TV thanks to Wingun and SMogīs driver)

5) LCD TOP GUN

I know at this time wich one suits me best...... accuracy/price/gameplay

Best Regards

So what about all of those GunCon2 clones?  The main issue I have to deal with is the rollover issue.  I know the LCDTopgun works, but I've seen nothing about the rest of the GunCon2 clones (which is what the LCD Topgun *is*)

The clones of GUNCON-2 are nice gun models and nice-looking. Such as a walther or a Uzi... With lot of extras, like Laser pointer and Autofire, and etc...etc....

But 90% of them requires that you play with a lot of brightness to track well on the screen. So....... bad gameplay for some users that like to track well screen with their lightgun

Remember  that Guncon-2 connected to a PC , you must play it on a TV. Or do a Hardware Hack made by Sylver to play on PC MONITOR.

If I donīt remember bad.....Smog said that its driver were not vista compatible.  So I guess that your favourite VISTA64   is not compatible neither.

Best Regards.

Okay - I'll have to dig it up here in a bit, but I *do* have a reference perl implementation that I could generate a win32 binary for that would allow you to use it on Vista64.  The concern is more for whether or not it would work.

To be fair - my focus has been getting the GunCon2 working on FreeBSD and MacOS X,  but that's another story entirely.

I hadn't experienced tracking problems on my arcade monitor on low brightness.  As soon as my new chassis arrives later this week, I'll play with that.

I finally got a quote back.  It's $29 shipping (airmail) to the U.S.  Which would make the total $51.

But the guy said they only have 1 left.

I'm passing... I think I'll wait for better ones.
