Defender comp #0; official start today

Ok, you defender freaks, get your game on. I would prefer red label, but this is just a friendly competition! (So beat the Shhhhh out of everyone!)

You all have one month to start a defender game and see what the highest score you can get is (this can even include such things as "bragging rights" for getting "so far without losing a life".) Please be honest and provide screen shots if able to. (Remember, if you try to cheat by just saying you are better than someone else; there are plenty of people here who can call you out; so don't be a douch and do ush the game! (bad bad pun... me sorry)

Top score to beat: Protokatie 0 points. (hope that wont be too hard to beat ;) )

BTW, I wont be playing for 2 reasons:
1: my mame version I like doesnt like any version of defender (unless I like slo-mo... and that would be like cheating)

2: As the person who proposed this, It would be a conflict of interest (IE I suck the the game, but I still like it! :D )

Please specify what version of the game you are using, and esp if you are using a dedicated cab.
--- Yes I AM doing this on purpose, and yes I DO realize it is pissing you off.

I'll pass... Defender is a classic game, but I never liked to play it much.

EVIL EVIL BLASPHEMER! You and your fancy laser disc can go elsewhere!

:P

Not that I care, really. Just odd that you would bother to say you pass on it... As the first reply. Im not good at it either, but I LOVED it. It was like R-type with a bit more strategy and more freedom. (I still sucked at it, but you don't have to be good at a game to like it!)

So really this is a 'who's good?' sort of comp. Which is fine.

Yes. The comp is for fun. And I hope some people are tasking themselves with it. Basically I am calling for defender dorks to play a few good rounds and post their scores. I know this isnt the official game comp (hence why I called it game comp #0). If you like Defender and dont like Q*Bert, please try this comp out. If it isnt fun for you, then what the hell are you doing playing arcade games....

This guy didn't have a bad game ....

Just to add. Defender took a lot of my pocket money in the 80's despite never really being very good at it.

There was something about the game that kept me putting my money in the machine, must have been the challenge. It has got to rank up there as the hardest arcade came to master.

I can get about 40K on a regular machine. Doubt I can do much on a keyboard, or my MAME cab (the button I'd use for reverse isn't close enough to my left hand when it's using the left joystick)

  • Yeah, owning a MAME cab only leads to owning real ones. MAME just isn't good enough. It's a gateway drug.

Though I used to play it in the arcade, I was little and it was pretty hard. I mostly played it back in the day on Atari 2600, so that wasn't quite the same.

In recent years, I'd grown fond of it in MAME, but since they've made the control setup more accurate, I've had trouble playing it. Now I'm contemplating setting my cabinet up to run an older MAME version, since the proper controls are difficult with my 7-button setup.

I never liked the reverse button on the left, so I have it on the top left button of the set. Fire is top middle, thrust is lower left, smart bombs are lower right, and hyperspace is upper right. Same as with Asteroids, I hate/ed the fire and thrust right next to each other.
