Not sure what it was originally though I want to say it was a Bally/Midway design.

Yeah, I would also say Robotron. I have a former Robotron cab and it looks identical in shape. Mine was converted to Final Fight when I got it (and was mostly gutted...made it a MAME cab) You might even be able to see the lettering underneath if you get the sides in the right light.  Mine still had the big 2084 vertical lettering under 2 layers of paint.
