BYOLightGun idea #2 (different possible idea)
« on: June 13, 2003, 05:15:59 pm »
Now that lasers are pretty cheap... And you can get ends on them that will split them into lines....

couldn't we get a laser that shoots out a big + sign... big enought that the horizontal and vertical lines will go edge to edge on the screen?

If so, are there any senser strips that we could put around the monitors that would then be able to say that one laser part crossed here, here, here and here... and with those 4 points, we know it's pointing here....

it wouldn't be as good an end solution as the other idea I had because it wouldn't  allow for multiple guns... but it would remove the flash, and allow for constant polling for machine gun games.

But wouldn't you have a big red (or other color) plus sign moving around over your screen?  That seems unacceptable.

Use a IRASER  (InfraRed-aser), instead of a red Light-aser (laser).  *shrug*

How easier would calibration be?

Not sure if rebelscum was serious, but IR would be the way to go.  This is actually how they do it for modern lightgun games in arcades.  There is a large IR LED at the end of the gun, and about 10 or so IR sensors surrounding the edges of the display.  The circuit figures out where the gun is pointing by measuring the intensity of the IR LED at the different locations.

No flashing of the screen, and apparently there is a way to detect multiple guns (although I'm not sure how it does that...maybe different blink/refresh rates of each gun's LED).

A lot more plausable for homebrew solution than a laser crosshair/sensor (no offense Lilwolf...was still a good though).
