Where to find a big 4:3 LCD
« on: September 28, 2008, 07:25:26 am »
I am dismantlling my main Mame cabinet for to make room for a redesigned version. My current cab has a 4:3 screen ratio 28" tube tv which is a good size and works well. To save space the redesigned cab is going to have a flat screen monitor but I can't find one bigger than 20"  in a 4:3 screen ratio, I can only find widescreens which will not work for me.

Does anyone know anyone that still sells 22" - 28" 4:3 ratio flat screen monitors? I am in th UK but if needs must I'll have to pay shipping from the US.

Thanks

Im afraid your out of luck, its a shame but they just don't seem to make large 4:3 LCDs :(

The largest one I know is the 21" Samsung SyncMaster 214T. Its not exactly cheap tho  ~£440.

Thanks, that's what I thought.

I've seen a 20" 4:3 on Dabs for £100, looks like I maight have to go with that. Thought it was worth an ask in case I'd missed somethig somewhere.

The 214T is really kick-ass in quality of image.
If you want bigger, you can also get a DELL 2709 and hide the left and right part under a bezel. It will leave you with a 4:3 screen of 24 inch.

Not sure if Fry's ships to the UK, but this was in the ads this morning:

Thanks for the tip. Looks like Frys will ship to the UK but I need to get them to confirm the cost. Unfortunately the $60 rebate is only for peeps based in the US. Still, might be a runner if the shipping isn't too steep.

Obviously the US power lead is different but I guess I can just substitute this for a UK one I've already got without any problems?

Also the PAL/NTSC stuff doesn't apply to monitors does it?

I think the main point is that the screen is square, not rectangular like widescreens.

I think what Blanka was saying was that according to the specs it is a widescreen.
The picture on Frys page may be slightly deceptive? Emprex specs

I think we'll start seeing arcade LCD's soon. Somebody linked a page with one made to replace 25" CRT's by Happ or Betson (can't remember which). Thing with them is they're going to be very spendy.

Not only are they hard to find, they are also hard to find in large sizes and if you do find any they are also pretty expensive.

Thats where the Samsung 214T comes in. Still not cheap compared to all the TN crap in stores, but it is much better priced than the ones on New Egg here.

All the Lindberghs and the likes go for 16:9 1366x768 pixel TV's. Doubt anybody is going to make 25 inch 4:3's for restauration purposes only. These panel factories work by the 100000's.

I can't find the link at the moment. Perhaps someone will see it and post the link. It was a 24.8 (I think) drop in replacement for 25 and 27's, but its not out yet. It won't be for restoration only... IT will use them by the thousands for Golden Tee, Silver Strike, etc.

The Frys one has now gone up by $100!

Looks like it's widescreen anyway so now not the best way forward.

Like the sound of these LCD replacement arcade monitors, just need the info. Bet they're expensive!

Looks like it's goinng to have to be a 20" for the time being. There will be space in the cab to upgrade to a bigger one if they become available I guess.

Just wondering, but do they make 4:3 HDTV's?  I'm 99% sure they don't, but that would be cheaper than an LCD computer monitor and if you get the right one with an RGB input would work just as well.

There are some 27" 4:3 CRT HDTV's out there. Just search via google. Here's one:

Of course, these are nowhere near as slim as an LCD.

Yeah I have the 25" Golden Tee monitor/cabinet and was thinking of making into a Mame/Multi Gaming system.

I been on the fence of removing the Arcade Monitor and putting in an LCD.  A 4:3 would look more stock but it doesn't seem like it is in the cards.  If they are coming out with something new to replace all the Golden Tee and Silver Strike arcades out there.  It has to be pretty expensive IMO because they will have to recoupe costs right off the bat.

So it might have to be a 16:9 aspect ratio LCD or I will order the arcade VGA and the JPAC for the Arcade Monitor.  Either way it is going to cost about the same if I just bought a 16:9 widescreen 26 inch monitor.

Who knows.  The way things are going in the economy I might have to just hold off on all projects for now and wait.  uggg :banghead:

This is an interesting looking set, but does anyone have one and know for sure if it will work with a PC?

From the manual:
Quote
(HDMI/DVI connection to a computer is not possible.
This TV cannot be used as a Monitor with your PC.)

A few years back my brother got a killer deal on a 30" CRT HDTV with a DVI input and we tried everything to get it to work with his PC as a monitor... even tried using PowerStrip and nothing would work.  I could get an image up but it was really wonky and useless.

I'd love to go this route too and at $298 it's a killer deal  IF it works with a PC.  If not, I guess it's a nice set for your bedroom.

I'd pay up to 3k for a 32"-34" 4:3 LCD for my showcase cabinet.

Runs some decent resolutions as well

That doesn't appear to be the same set... it's a Samsung but looks like it's just a regular TV with component input and not the 4:3 HDTV listed in the other link.

Converting computer DVI to HDMI can be a hit and miss affair. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Your best bet for using this television is to buy a graphics card that has an HDMI port. It should work as I've hooked up computer to televisions numerous times where the television says it can't be used as a monitor. HDMI to HDMI is the way to go. Of course, I can't guarantee that there won't be problems.

I forgot to mention that the reason DVI to HDMI is so hit and miss is because there are different types of DVI ports. Here's a link that explains some of the differences.

According to the thread below, Billabs does a 26" LCD.

http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=84315.0

I'd give them a call at 1.770.840.0084.

I haven't, but I'm thinking of contacting Billabs on Monday - to confirm my suspicion that you all misunderstood their clear-as-mud message.

First off, their model numbers generally start with "BL", then the display size in inches, and then "L" for LCD or "C" for CRT. You'll notice that "BL26C0T" has a C as the 5th letter.

Secondly, I've never heard of any LCD panel manufacturer making anything larger than 21/21.3/21.6" panels. I doubt it will ever happen.

Finally, there's nothing to stop them from selling a 26" widescreen LCD to install in your Golden Tee's, etc. Sure it would be weird, but maybe they're counting on the display to "pillarbox" the signal, or distort it to fit.

Of course, I would be happy to be proven wrong.

PS. Hey gang.

I don't get that middle part. You mean PC-type?...whereas a '26" widescreen' is a TV?

I don't get that middle part. You mean PC-type?...whereas a '26" widescreen' is a TV?

I think he's talking about only 4:3 .

I'm looking for a 4:3 LCD now as well...you'd think a 20" wouldn't be insanely expensive...but it is :)

19" can be had for ~150-175, but 20" shoot up to the well over $250 range.

Debating just getting a 19...not sure how much the extra inch will matter.   ;)

The extra inch will matter in a sense that you move from 5:4 to real 4:3. 19 inchers are never 4:3 with their 1280x1024 resolutions. 20 and 21 inch on the other hand is 1600x1200 and real 4:3

I'm compromising and putting a 25.5" LCD computer monitor in my cab. It's got a 16:10 aspect ratio, unlike HDTV's which have a 16:9 aspect ratio. I think when I measured it, it was like playing games on a 23" 4:3 monitor when you use sidebars (unstretched). That's pretty close to the 24.8" standard arcade monitor I was planning on using.

Yes, this thread is about large 4:3 panels.

I've contacted Billabs (in Georgia) by phone, they will be sending me information about the Billabs BL26C0T you mentioned in this thread:
http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=84315.0

I was able to get the price - $595.00 USD presuming I heard it right (the connection was bad)

[EDIT] Looking at the site more, I'm going to guess that it's a 19"-21" 4:3 LCD panel with a huge bezel around it so that it will mount properly in a cabinet designed to take 25"-27" CRTs. We'll see.

Shesus.  I can't seem to even find a 20" 4:3 LCD for under $360, which is a bit insane I must say...
