HAPPS USB Trackball issue, 2 questions
« on: September 23, 2008, 04:03:16 pm »
1. So I recently replaced the USB / optic boards on my HAPPS TB.  The windows message I get when the device is plugged in is “A device attached to this computer has malfunctioned. Windows does not recognize this device”.  Which repeats over and over as Windows tries to read the device.  I was told by the vendor that this means the device is fine and I have some sort of USB conflict.  The thing is, it does this on a couple of other PCs, one of which is a fresh XP install. The other thing is that this is the same issue I originally had with my USB HAPPs TB after 6 months of use and the reason I got the replacement boards.  If any one has any ideas as to how resolve the USB conflict if in fact that is the issue I would be quite the happy camper!

2. I have a spare optiwiz and a spare optics board left over from the old HAPP USB, hopefully meaning I could remove the USB+Optics board that is not working and use the extra non-USB optics only board.  Is there any instructional on how to interface the optiwiz with a HAPS optics board?

Thanks in advance

P

1.  That message means either something is worry with the board, so it doesn't correctly identify itself to the PC on plug in, so the PC can't deside what driver to use (most likely), or your PCs have corrupted ID-driver list.  IOW, since you tested on multiple PCs, one a vanilla install, the vender is full of it and the board is bad (or the cable is bad).

2.  The OptiWiz is pretty well labeled.  I thought GGG had a TB to Optiwiz harness, but can't find it in the 2 seconds I gave myself.  You can make your own; here's a pinout of the happs boards.

BTW, I prefer the arcade sensor board to high quality encoder (GGG's or ultimarc's), over happs USB board.  Good luck!

I didn't even THINK to swap out the USB cable that connects to the circuit board!! I still had my old one from the other board that fried and what do ya know? IT WAS THE CABLE!! On inspection it looked absolutely fine, after all it was brand new. I can't freak'n believe it. Love this forum! :notworthy:

I have a happ usb/ps2 tracball and i'm tired of overspin issues, I picked up a used happ golden tee trackball on ebay and a GGG board and cables. I Hope I can play marble madness and golden tee with no overspin after i set em up.

...IT WAS THE CABLE!!...

Glad to hear it was the easiest fix.  (Glad I added that comment in the last second just to cover ---my bottom--- in the rare case it was the problem.) ;D

FYI, the new (used 19.99 happ golden tee trackball from ebay), optiwiz encoder + cables arrived yesterday.

I took out the happ USB trackball, which I had aready replaced the board once because it went bad.

The results, the new trackball with opti pac encoder is AWESOME! On my first run through marble madness there was no overspin at all and I got further than I ever had on my cabinet with the happ USB trackball. There is 0 overspin when I fired up Golden tee no matter how hard i tried to spin the trackball just long golf shots!

In my experience i'd never buy the usb trackball again. GGG encoder and stock trackball module are the way to go.

**corrected the name** thanks U

Glad to hear it worked so well.

One small point though

GGG = OptiWiz
Ultimarc = OptiPac

Both high quality.
