Need a Theme for my MAME box!
« on: September 19, 2008, 04:16:00 pm »
Thanks to everyone for the advice on my cab, it's coming along swimmingly.
It's about 1/2 way there and is functional. (for the most part)

I'm now sifting through ideas trying to decide what to brand my cab to no avail.
I was going to call it the "Norriscade" and was about to have a friend doctor up art of chuck norris
fighting 300 commandos in a jungle or something but I think the internet meme is now somewhat grating.

So if anyone can make a suggestion, you'd have my everlasting thanks and open invite to come down to Chicago and play it.

Here's what I have in it / want to do with it.
It was originally a Street Fighter Championship edition later refitted to X-Men.
Since then it's been gutted/stripped and is in the process of being painted all black.
We're going to mount a few inches of checkerplate on the front/sides of it to clean up the rough bottom on it.
I have 2 ultimarc mag-stick pluses as well as 14 GG Electric Ice pushbuttons (White) all of which will be fitted with RGB leds.
The CP is steel with a waterfall like bend from the face of it and I'm having a friend cut and weld a new portion
on top of it to fit in an GG Electric Ice-T Trackball between the two players.
I picked up a new Betson Imperial 27" for the cab (it fits!) and am using the splitter on my GC to mount leave
the ability to hook up an external tv/monitor for extra players/competition view etc.
Lastly, I decided to house an Xbox 360 wireless adapter in the cab so that a 3rd/4th can be added wirelessly on the fly.

To help here's a quick panel mock up
and a photos of it currently:

This is just patched and primed.

Thanks a ton!

Dynamo Z-back cab, nice.
I dont like the trackball idea at all, looks bad and Im sure it'll just get in the way.  As for themes, what colors do you like? What games do you play the most?  Mine was Mortal Kabinet cause Im a huge mortal kombat mark.

go for a pun!

I have to agree that the trackball idea as indicated looks ridiculous...in a bad sort of way.  You'd be MUCH better off removing it or expanding the front of the CP to make it a rectangle.

Ok. So the painting is almost done and despite the general census, I let my friend go ahead and add on to the CP similarly to what I had a previously illustrated. The results are interesting to say the least. He ended up adding what I think is a tad too much but which makes the cab look like it's got a set of nuts or something. I've been giggling all night about it. I'm not sure if I like it or dislike it exactly and I know he can remove and just extend the CP out but after putting the preliminary controls in and faux playing with a friend, (monitor was removed) it surprisingly isn't in the way. I think the fact that the panel itself is so short it makes up for it. I think at this point I can either add cup holders or light guns in there or add a few more buttons to it to fill in the extra space. I think I may keep it and try to go extra far with with the art on the cab, possibly overlaying artwork all the way around the CP additions and silk screening the buttons and trackball to coincide with the theme.

Here are some pics of my arcade and its nuts.

At the moment the current contenders for themes for this beast are the "Necronomicade" or the "Total Package."

Comments? Suggestions? Please let me hear your two cents!

if my friend did that to my arcade machine, we wouldn't be friends anymore.

Call that cab "CTRL+Z"  cause that needs undone.

My ribcage hurts just looking at that sharp corner on the trackball extension.   :o

I'm not thrilled with it from that aspect, but ignore everyone giving you crap about it looking bad.  If you like it, it's your cabinet, that's all that matters.

At one point I did think about putting a refrigeration unit with a keg in it.

if my friend did that to my arcade machine, we wouldn't be friends anymore.

I'm not sure how tall you are but the CP comes up to just above my legs so there's no way that thing will dig into my ribs. I can bump my hips against it but that's only if I intentionally do sooo. As for people giving me crap, It doesn't bug me, I can accept it looks ridiculous. The new challenge is to make it look un-ridiculous without changing it structurally.
