How to setup CPViewer with Mala
« on: September 19, 2008, 12:55:23 am »
Mala & CPViewer

download cpviewer and cpviewer system files

unzip system files and run the setup.bat
unzip cpv2 and read the pdf file in docs folder to setup your layout and to test if you have things working.

once you are satisfied everything is installed correctly, & if you havent already done so, we can now produce your static images,
this can take a while

In windows goto start run
type cmd
press enter
at the command prompt type cd\
enter
then type cd\mame\cpv2
enter
or whatever the path is to your cpv2
now type

cpv2.exe –s
this Will run a batch job that creates snaps off all the Mame games and clones that are currently documented
in the controls.ini file. This process will take approximately 20 minutes to complete.

If you have instruction cards, place these in inside instructions folder inside cpv2 folder
if you have original control panel pics these go in cpanel folder inside cpv2 folder
(THESE MUST HAVE THE SAME NAME AS THE ROM) eg:Ghouls and ghosts = gng.png

This has cpv2 setup, now for Mala

start Mala

right click and go to options
controller
keyboard
external applications and put the following

C:\mame\cpv2\CPV2.exe -r=%rom%

or the path to your cpv2 folder

and under key put the letter you want to use to launch viewer ( I put P so you can launch with Pause Button)

or you can use the cpviewer app under Control Panel Viewer
put a tick in use control panel viwer and decide whether to launch at game start or replace info window in which case it will be

launched with left alt.

I prefer the first option as an external app, then you can use alt for history etc and only use cpviwer when you need it.

make sure you use the -r=%rom%
dont use -r=[name] as stated in cpv2 pdf as this wont work

hope this helps some people

As far as Mala goes I think its the best frontend I have tried so far
Keep up the good work.
Dung

Does anybody know where to get pretty button pics like the ones on the CPViewer example?  I guess I could render some if I have to...  :'(

I just took a photo of my panel for the picture in the background.  Here's what it looks like before each game.

This is the image that comes up before mala loads... also the desktop wallpaper.

I thnk you should change your nick to "retrosexual", just to stick it to all those politicians that try to be hip...  Heh, I said hip.

Anyways, I like your pics.  But Im so crappy at cameras that I knew it would come out like doo-doo if I tried it.  Plus i wanted that "illustrated", "fake" look to match my theme.

So I made these (attached):

I still have to make some one and two player buttons and stuff, and adjust my renders, but so far I think thats what Im going with.

:-o

the buttons look great.

I made the handle after a buddy of mine here in Texas that lives in the city calls himself MetroTextual.

Question.  I installed mala and followed the pdf setup for cpviewer.  However, when I try to run a batch job by doing the following:

"In windows goto start run
type cmd
press enter
at the command prompt type cd\
enter
then type cd\mame\cpv2
enter
or whatever the path is to your cpv2
now type

cpv2.exe –s
this Will run a batch job that creates snaps off all the Mame games and clones that are currently documented
in the controls.ini file. This process will take approximately 20 minutes to complete."

I end up getting an error message that reads: "Run-time error '9': Subscript out of range" and no CP displays appear.  Does anyone know how to fix this or what I might have missed?  Thanks!
