Kudos to Bob Roberts!
« on: June 11, 2003, 11:08:40 pm »
I just felt like this was worth mentioning because it probably doesn't get said enough around here, that's for sure!  For noobs and old timers alike, you never have to worry about ordering from Bob (www.therealbobroberts.com).  For the second time in a row, he *way* underestimated the shipping cost on an order I placed with him.  I've got to remember to add a few extra $$ to the price he quotes in the future so he doesn't have to eat the extra shipping costs.  His prices are already cheap enough...

Tonight I installed a cap kit I got from him.  Here's a few pics for people who haven't done this before.

Before (look at that dirty, grimy chassis!)

After (shiny new caps)

Uhgg, look at those old leaky caps!

I've order two sets of buttons a little while ago and he is very prompt and lets you know when he receives payment and when you will receive your order. Definately recommend him.

That's a 19" W-G K7000 series.  17 caps in the kit.  It took me about 1.5 hrs from when I removed the chassis until I reinstalled it.

What kind of benefit do you get by replacing all the capacitors?  It's obvious the old ones were in bad shape, but what are the symptoms of leaking caps?  Did changing them out make a big difference in the monitor?

Replacing the caps cures all sorts of monitor problems and can result in a brighter/clearer picture. I even capped a few of my monitors that didn't seem to need it. Basically so I would have to do it in the future.

I ordered my first few cap kits from Bob along with a couple of Ms. galapac reunion joysticks. I don't order cap kits from him anymore though. Not because there is anything wrong with his kits or service, just because I can piece together cap kits at my local electronics junk store for roughly the same price and then I don't have to wait or pay shipping (plus I usually buy a bunch of extra ones there, just in case).

Sending a check or money order to Bob is much safer than using Paypal or a credit card. Wait till paypal steals your money and then see how much you like it (they got over $100 of mine the day the just decided to freeze every account without an attached bank account. It could have been worse though, a few weeks earlier I had almost $1000 in there). Search around the net, you will find thousands of stories of Paypal stealing from people. But you won't find any stories about Bob Roberts stealing from anyone. =)

You always have the option of sending Bob a money order via bidpay or one of the other online money order vendors (which lets you use a credit card).

I have to say that Bob Roberts has excellent service.  I was nervous about sending a check and then having to wait until my order arrived.  I placed my order on Monday, mailed my check on Tuesday and my package arrived on Thursday!  He must have sent my order before he even received my check.  Bob Roberts is a trustworthy business man and I would highly recommend him to everyone.  Oh and aside from the great service Bob Roberts frequently has specials and his prices for Happ products are the lowest that I have seen.

I'm going to have to agree with everyone else.  Not only are his prices great, but sometimes if there is a small item that may help with the stuff you ordered he'll throw it in for free!  It was a nice surprise when I forgot to order nuts with my carriage bolts and they were in my order anyway.  Really great guy.

Read his ordering FAQ's.  He doesn't take credit card or Paypal to keep his prices down.  All of thoes services take a % of the sale, and he can't be making much profit as it is now.

Just to let you know, I wasn't ripping on Bob just cause he didn't take Paypal or Credit Cards, I was just stating that I wish he did, since that is how I pay for everything.

I hate mailing things off.  I just recently moved and my bank got my address wrong, the only way they will fix it is if I mail them my correct address.  I still haven't mailed it, I wanted to email them or just handle it over the phone.  I guess I just have snailmailaphobia :p

Like paigeoliver said, replacing the caps can cure all sorts of funky problems like "jailbars", smearing, dim colors, etc...  I recapped this monitor just as preventative maintenance.  The monitor wasn't very bad at all and I had been using it as-is, but I'm getting ready to install it in a cocktail and I didn't want to take it back out in a year or two to recap it then.  I could tell that the caps were original (1988), so I figured I was running on borrowed time already.  For $5 and about an hour of my time to save a headache later seemed like a good idea.  :)

I have the same issues (above) regarding snail mail and prefer to use PayPal when I can. Bob does not accept it to keep his prices down but he also told me that PayPal has been banned in several states including his state of residence (Louisiana if memory serves me right).

To buy from Bob, he turned me onto a money order service at www.payingfast.com Basically, you purchase the MO over the net using your credit card. They notify him and take care of the mailing, etc. The fees are decent and I have found the service to be reliable. Anyway, it beats running around to the bank and/or post office.

What kind of benefit do you get by replacing all the capacitors? Did changing them out make a big difference in the monitor?

I have bought about a dozen "broken" games that just needed new caps.  Problems range from no picture (vector monitors) to compressed image.  If the tube's not blown and the flyback's good then replacing caps will solve the problem.

Be careful though - you'd rather not find out what it feels like to have 19 kV pulsing through your body.
