FBI: Winners Don't Use Drugs
« on: September 08, 2008, 06:40:57 pm »
I found the picture on a MAME forum months ago and loved the idea of having it as a Backdrop. I remember seeing it as a kid when playing arcades. I had it up on the screen, as a background image, for a few weeks to see how it felt. As sweet and nostalgic as it is, I felt an update was needed. I didn’t want to take away from the Anti-Drug Propaganda message, but needed to make more modern and sinister the feeling. I looked up the logo of Homeland Security and found it to be a very powerful image. It reminded me of the feeling when I saw the ‘Starship Troopers’ movie, where the uniforms seemed Nazieskque in their more modernized/futuristic style.

I now needed to find some kind of quote relating to the War on Drugs, but it was important to be a real Homeland Security quote and somehow tying the War on Drugs to the new War on Terror. It didn’t take too long before I found the perfect quote. Recorded the day before my birthday: January 23 2005, the Secretary of Homeland Security, Michael Chertoff was speaking to the Senate Banking Committee. I took the quote and replaced the “Don’t do Drugs” with “Frankly, we can’t differentiate between terrorism, organized crime and Drug Dealing,” I only had so much room so I omitted the “organized crime part’. I wonder if I should include […] into the quote just to make it that more accurate. I don’t want to be too anal. I also added Chertoff’s name to the bottom to bastardise the original image as best I could. I am very happy with the results.

what do you all think?

I think this post has a good chance to end up in Post Hell or P&R.   A great accomplishment for your first post...

I did the Wikipedia thing.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Winners_Don%27t_Use_Drugs

It detailed how don't do drugs picture was mandatory from 1989 to 2000 on all north american cabinets.
This was imposed and implemented and burned into my mind as a kid for playing arcades through the 90s.
It;s part of the Arcade experience, history... reality.
This is not a political statement any more than a reflection of a true cabinet only with a modern twist.

I took a lot of time and energy to  update it.

If you see only a political position in this post, then perhaps we all lose when this honest contribution disappears.

I for one am proud of the effort and want to share the backdrop to my MAME.

I think the text of the post is more political than the image itself.  I feel sorry for you that you feel this country or even an aspect of it appears Naziesque to you... but that is what the Politics & Religion forum is for.  This forum isn't for spreading your apparent distaste for the current "America".

Also,  removing text from the middle of a quote is disingenuous... and changes meaning of the quote considerably.  Without "organized crime" in the quote,  it appears to be all that much more ridiculous....obviously the effect you were looking for.

Furthermore,  any monkey can take a logo,  past it & a few words on to a colored back ground and create what you've created... where is the artistic value you seem so proud of?   If you actually created the logo - THEN i'd be impressed.

Friz:
I see it the same as you.

It's completely political. (And, again, not funny. Even if I agreed with you, heebeegb, I still wouldn't find it to be a funny image. At least manipulate the original text to be pro-drugs or something. All you did was make a political statement, and not much of one)

This is excellent. Nice take on a classic, and nostalgic to boot. Thats why I screengrabbed the original and made it the bootup image on my cab PC. And you know what? They're right, winners DON'T use drugs.

I always get itchy with this department of firearms and drugs or homeland security stuff.
Americans use more drugs than Dutch, especially weed, while it is legal here and not in the US. Lost points for HS. Why has the eagle a weed-leaf in one foot and syringes in the other?
And in arcades, the computer always wins, and the visitor does not. So there are no winners in arcades anyway. How good you are does not matter, you always get mad when that saucer destroys you or that ghost eats you. A silly seal to show in games!

I hear the South Park housewifes singing "Blame Canada" or "Blame Mechico" already  >:D

This admittedly did get a chuckle out of me. However, the quote should definitely have an ellipsis to show part of it's been omitted.

I thinnk emotions run high anytime "nazi" comes into the discussion. However, I'm satisfied with his explanation that the comparison is in a visual graphic sense.

At least fix the grammar.  I don't care about the politics - I hate signs with grammar problems.

Since drug money is used to fund terrorism efforts - I can see why that quote is correct.

There, that ought to get the ball rolling on getting this thread to post hell.

Screenshot it from NARC. That is the game where this is most burned into my memory. Perhaps it was show more in the attract mode since the game was about battling drug dealers.

Just stretch this to size. (Which is the original resolution of 320x224, so it'll look fine stretched)

THE GRASS IS ALWAYS GREENER AT YOUR NEIGHBOURS

It's either incomplete or missing a possessive apostrophe on the last word.  Plus the US Gov't would never use a Royal spelling of neighbors.

I think most of us looked over this one and thought you were referring to the original post that started this thread. Yeah, THIS ONE is awful, but I couldn't figure out what was so wrong with the first pic. Glad to know we were just confused.

Give me about a half hour, and when I get home I can make it say whatever you want. ;)

The "weiner" was intentional.  Using the svg and Inkscape you can easily change it.
