Archos 7 Media Tablet - so close...
« on: September 06, 2008, 03:20:29 pm »
Amazon link, 160gb version

user's guide

It sounded perfect.  A seven inch touch display on a device that can hold a large audio and video collection.  Built in web browser and wifi.

The folder navigation system looks good and is friendly to music styles stored by genre/artist/album, like my library is.  See p. 16.

Then why-oh-why don't they support a jukebox manner of queuing up songs???  The online manual says (p. 19):

“Queue” allows you to select a track to be played after the current one
is finished.
while a track is playing, switch to the browser window, select
a track to highlight it, then open it. This is your queued track,
which will be played after the current track.
you can only queue one track at a time.

Damn.  I was all ready to start saving up,  This would have been a really good heart of a jukebox cabinet.  Imagine being able to just snap it into a cabinet at home and then popping it out if you wanted to carry it for the day.

How hard would it have been to support a true queue?  argghhh.

I bought an Archos 20 GB media player about 5-6 years ago. I was able to load RockBox on it. You might want to see if you can replace the *firmware* on the unit with Rockbox. Rockbox is an open source firmware for media players.

Good luck.
