The quickest way is to look up the cabinet on KLOV if you are unsure.

Basic Rules...

Jamma's have 56 pins, so anything less is non-jamma.

Most older games are non-jamma (ex: Pacman, DK, Frogger)

There are lots of other ways to tell.  Check out this link for Jamma FAQ's...

It should also be noted that JAMMA really has no relationship to the cabinet other than coincedental.  JAMMA is a wiring standard and refers to the wiring inside the cabinet.  A cabinet that is known to be originally JAMMA is likely to still be JAMMA but may not be - and likewise a classic cab could have been converted to JAMMA at any point.

The only way to be completely sure is to look at the wiring harness.

Another clue is that non-jamma games usually have more than 1 connector or boards.

but there are exceptions to that, like NBA Jam

And a lot of Atari classics.  Some of them look a lot like JAMMA harnesses.

Welp...I'm going to continue my ignorance. I guess that I was wondering from the standpoint that if I were out buying a cab how could I tell from just looking inside? I went to Jammaboards.com like Zeno recommended and that helped a lot. I'm really pretty new at this and I'm making every attempt to relive some of my past. After I told my wife about my latest cabs, she thanked me for not growing up. I'm pushing hard on 50. I've been in the ham radio hobby for years and thought that I would get out of that to pursue arcade machines. I have a spare bedroom that I call my man room (I should really call it the kid room) that is going to have about 10 cabs and a kegerator. I thought it might be nice to get a Jamma cab to give me more games in less space.

Well, REALLY more games in less space is a mamecab, but sure you could do that. The main thing to look for, since you're looking inside, is a jamma edge connector - either connected to a board or hanging.

I'm doing a Mame cab...actually two. One for verts and one for horizontals. But Mame does not do all games...they don't do Raiden. That is one that I bought because I really liked it. But, I'm getting off topic. Thanks for the pointer!

If you're shopping for a JAMMA cab, try and find a generic, rather than dedicated game specific, cabinet. Many generic cabinets were flooded into the arcades in the late 80's/early 90's with JAMMA wiring as standard so arcade owners had a wider choice of PCB's to install in it and swap out when needed.

In the UK we had some nice ones from BAS, Silverline and a few other random companies.

Raiden is a JAMMA game.

It is but it does not play correctly. I picked up a Tekken 4 cab today. It has no MB but the display is awesome. Guess what I'm fixing to use for a jamma cab?

What version of MAME are you using? There are a bunch of Raiden games, and most of them run great. I know the original has been fine in MAME for a long time. I think I have up to Raiden Fighters:Jet working on my vert cab.

Really, don't worry about finding a JAMMA cab, worry about finding a good cab.  It's not difficult to convert any cab to JAMMA wiring or vice versa.  If you don't understand wiring yet this is when you should learn - you're going to need to know it in order to have arcade games in your home.

That's weird. I get a little nag screen that says does not work don't bother trying on Raiden or Raiden II.

I think the wiring will be easy for me. I already have a semi related occupation.

If you got it home and it wasn't a jamma cab you could convert it for about 15 bucks.

Well said.  Converting an old Konami to Jamma for the first time forced me to learn a lot.

Get a good cabinet and the rest will be fine.
