How to list select clones instead of parents
« on: August 30, 2008, 05:40:12 pm »
Greetings!

(Yes I've searched!)

I have a small number of games such as Gauntlet that I'd like to select the 2 Player clone or version of the game but never the parent.

To be more specific, "Gauntlet (rev 14)" [directory 'gauntlet'] is the parent of 19 clones, one of which "Gauntlet (2 Players, rev 6)" [directory 'gauntlet2p'] is the one I would always like to play.

I've tried variations on the options for 'rom path' which works fine for only displaying what's in my ROM folder, but will not list other versions (clones of the parent?).

Hopefully I've learned something and my terminology is correct :)

How to I make this appear on the arcade games list?

Thanks so much for any help! (sorry, i'm a n00b ... but a fast learner!)

There's a program called malaGameList available on the mala website (or perhaps it's now bundled with the main program).  If you run that, you can add games directly to your working list, as well as edit the name and path of where it's launched.  I think that will cover what you're trying to do, I think.

from what i can tell, i can use this program to edit the game list of names, but not to add the desired clones.

i'll try the "import mame32 custom list" as i previously used mame32ui and came up with a favorites list.

any other suggestions? (i'll post back about the custom list import)

(edited)

originally i wasn't using the 'MalaGamelist.exe' in a way to make this work for me, i'll explain below.  my misinterpretation was pre-sorting my ROMs and while MaLa was running check marking the ROMs option to choose only the ROMs found in my rom folder and hope it would also read the different clones of the parents.

here's what i did to resolve this dilemma:
- created a ROM project list, including the proper revisions / versions desired (text file)
- loaded MaLa, right clicked, options, rom path options, unchecked everything, allowed MaLa to do what it needed to do then closed MaLa
- put 'MalaGamelist.exe' in the MaLa.exe root directory and executed the file
- at this point i have all 7,200+ MAME games in the list and began adding the games / versions / revisions desired while referring to my text file.  i also took this time to rename a few as needed.  i saved this list as 'Favorites.mlg' in the MaLa.exe root.
- opened MaLa, right click for the options pane, chose my newly created 'Favorites' list
- now all is well and good :)

Thanks for getting me to rethink the use of MalaGamelist.exe!

btw, is there a way to reorder the games in the list? they seem to be auto sorted alphabetically.

thanks!!

Not at the moment.

What order are you wanting?  Most used?

thanks for your reply! :)

no, not most used, just more logical (in my opinion)

this is my list as MaLa has it:
Asteroids
Asteroids Deluxe
Centipede
Defender
Dig Dug
Dig Dug 2
Donkey Kong
Donkey Kong Jr.
Frogger
Galaga
Galaga '88
Gauntlet
Gauntlet II
Gravitar
Hangman
Millipede
Missile Command
Mortal Kombat
Mortal Kombat 3
Mortal Kombat II
Ms. Pac-Man
Pac-Man
Q*Bert
Space Invaders
Super Breakout
Tempest

this is what i'd like it to be:
Ms. Pac-Man
Pac-Man
Asteroids
Asteroids Deluxe
Centipede
Millipede
Defender
Dig Dug
Dig Dug 2
Donkey Kong
Donkey Kong Jr.
Frogger
Galaga
Galaga '88
Gauntlet
Gauntlet II
Gravitar
Hangman
Missile Command
Mortal Kombat
Mortal Kombat II
Mortal Kombat 3
Q*Bert
Space Invaders
Super Breakout
Tempest

my own logical version of an alphabetical listing for my purposes

OK.

I will put it on my list.

The list is one page with a very small font.

So it will probably happen eventually.

I am getting things done now  ;)

I clicked on this thread because I thought it would be a science fiction subject  :laugh2:
Wish list: Galaga, Pacman, Pooyan, Star Wars cockpit, Gauntlet, Tron

And the Lord spake, saying, 'First shalt thou take out the Holy Pin. Then, shalt thou count to three. No more. No less. Three shalt be the number thou shalt count, and the number of the counting shall be three. Four shalt thou not count, nor either count thou two, excepting that thou then proceed to three.
