Did Jouney have a 4-way or 8-way joystick?
« on: August 29, 2008, 08:08:43 pm »
I was looking through the Midway games sorting them by joystick type. MAME lists Domino Man and Journey as 8-way, however the manuals for both games show a 4-way joystick. Domino man can only move in four directions,  but in Journey the player can move on diagonals. Does anyone know if the sticks on the actual machine were 4 or 8-way?

According to the joystick exploded view in the manual, it had a diamond shape restrictor. So 4-way.
NO MORE!!

Thus I'm guessing it had that special rubber Williams restrictor.

The game is also coded weird. For example, in the planet selection screen, the Scarab can change orientation but will only do so if you go a main direction; if you then turn to a diagonal, it will keep orientation but move in that diagonal direction. This is disorienting, particularly on some of the planets. As well, some of the plants you can only move 4 ways, so all in all it's kind of disorienting. Still a neat game, just a little clunky.

Thanks RayB and Ummon. The manual at Arcarc shows it as a regular 4-way stick (the same one as in Ms. Pac-Man). It looks like Mame is just wrong. It is interesting that it was coded with partial 8-way support. I sent a message on mamedev about Journey and Domino Man having the wrong controls. Hopefully they'll fix them someday.
