A few questions concerning...a lot
« on: August 27, 2008, 12:20:58 am »
I'm almost done with my cab (yay!).  I'm just tying up some loose ends now, but have a few questions.  I'll just jump right in.

I've got a Happs 2 player coin door.  It's hooked up, but it won't register coin drops.  I can manually flick the microswitch and it works fine, but quarters do nothing.  I don't think dropping them through is pushing the microswitch hard or fast enough.  Any ideas?

I'm looking for material to make a bezel out of.  Something flexible but sturdy.  I thought about spraypainting some styrofoam, but it might be more trouble than its worth (getting the proportions correct that is).  Something cardboard-y might work better.

I totally forgot about this, but the TV I used for the cabinet has a large magnetic splotch in the upper left hand corner of the screen.  I seem to remember degaussing as a solution, but have no idea how to go about doing this.  Thanks!

Most likely the quarter is not pressing the switch all the way. Can you post a picture?

Happ makes a really nice plastic bezel - comes in different sizes. That might be an option. Divemaster sells it cheaper than Happ.

You can use a soldering iron (the gun style). Search google for degaussing methods and you should find info on how to do it. Basically you hold the gun with the side facing the screen, turn it on and move in a circular motion, move slowly away from the screen and make the circles bigger as you move back. Stop when you're like 10 feet away.

You can make a decent bezel out of any wood/mountboard/card. Just be sure to measure the distance from the inner cab edges to the screen perimeter carefully.

Use PVC or ABS plastic for a bezel (model making shops have this). It can be cut with a knife, bent and glued with ease and finishes very nice.

Sure.  Sorry for the lo-res.  These were taken with my Macbook's webcam.

The first is the switch in its normal state.  The second is the switch with me holding a quarter inside to show how far back it gets pushed.  Sorry for the orientation if it's a little wacky.

Okay, this is getting more bizarre.  The coin mechs work fine sometimes, but on particular games (namely Street Fighter III: Third Strike) dropping a coin locks the mechanism from responding.  I can hit 5 (the button for coin slot one) on my keyboard before dropping a coin and it registers it fine, but as soon as I drop a quarter in the first coin slot, the game no longer accepts either button presses on the keyboard or coins.  This also happens with Double Dragon, and every now and then a game registers a "coin error".  What's going on?

Sounds like your switch is sticking maybe?

I suppose?  It doesn't seem like it when I drop the coin, but if it were, how would I go about fixing it?

well, the fact that you can manually register a credit leads me to think you need to adjust the wire. The fact that you get 'coin errors' leads me to think that your credit switch is getting stuck normally closed.

Actually, I think I just realized your problem. According to the diagram on your switch in the pic, it appears you have it wired to NC. The diagram is backwards from a Cherry switch.

That would explain alot!

If it's backwards from a cherry switch then that's definitely what happened, but do my symptoms really match that?  From what I understand about wiring (admittedly not a lot and not very well), if I had it attached to NC it would constantly be adding coins, right?  I'll switch it up and give it a try though.  Thanks.
