Happ Standard and Competition buttons. What's the difference?
« on: August 25, 2008, 04:46:55 pm »
Hi guys,
I'm a working on a project, using an old empty cabinet to build a (partly) custom arcade.
This is my first time setting up a control panel from scratch, I think I kinda pinned down the parts I want but I have some questions. Maybe you could help?

Can anyone tell me the difference between Happ standard (not ultimate) and competition buttons?
Standard buttons seem to be slightly more expensive for some reason.

Thanks!

Concave/Convex is one difference, dunno if its the only one or not.

Could be they're just charging more for the most popular option, as I imagine most people prefer these. I never have liked those Jap-style convex buttons, although they claimed to help speedy response in fighting games.

shape of the button top is the only difference.

Well, the way they feel though makes a huge difference. I hate convex.

Wasn't really sure that was the only difference.
Since its mostly out of taste I guess I'll go with the competition ones.
Gotta get to work now.

Thanks alot guys!

Competitons are preferred because the convex shape makes it easer to move your fingertips from button to button.  Also helps when you are sliding you hand over the buttons rapidly whenever you are mashing supers in fighting games.

Watch out making blanket statements like that. You don't realize where you are.

He explained why people WOULD prefer convex, not that everyone DID. He is also correct, concave are used for nostalgic purposes which is great if that's what you are shooting for.

The statement "Competitons are preferred" made it sound (to me) like "by the mass public".

You could read it both ways.

I believe the ratio of people who would prefer convex over concave is increasing though, most of todays gamers grew up playing on consoles afterall. I know I grew up playing concave but prefer convex now after trying both.

Maybe I should try playing on some good convex buttons. I think my problem is I've only played on crappy ones.

I have an arcade stick for PS2 that has the convex buttons and it really throws off my game compared to the normal buttons in the arcade.  Not a fan of the competitions.

Try some Seimitsu PS-14-GNs  I really liked them over my happs for fighting games/shmups.

I've looked at those, but I'm a wood panel guy. (Not by choice) Plus, I like my concaves. (Just switched back from the Ultralux buttons)
