Coin button not responding correctly
« on: August 23, 2008, 07:16:03 pm »
Hello, I am a newbie to this forum but have a minor/major problem.  Minor due to the fact that only the coin button is working incorrectly and major because it is the coin button, without it...no credits in MAME games.

Here is how my system is working.  I built my own cabinet/control panel (2 Players, six buttons each player including a 1Start and 1Coin button)  It is wired through an IPAC2 courtesy of Ultimarc.  The IPAC2 then is plugged into my modded xbox.  So I am running all my MAME games through my Xbox via the console adapter Ultimarc sells.  Everything is working excellent, I have programmed my own buttons but the only one not responding correctly is the 1Coin button.  I returned it to Ultimarc to test and they assured me it was working correctly.

Here is what it is doing.  Under test mode via opening Notepad in my PC, it shows that it is working when the button is pressed, it shows me the number 5.  When I open notepad and press the button, it shows me the number 5 as well (Normal mode, not Test Mode).  This indicates it is programmed so it should work.  Now, when I plug in the IPAC2 to the system to it and select a MAME game, it tells me in th screen to "Press any button to continue" Any button I press moves me to the start menu, Including the 1Coin button.  Now I need to press the 1Coin button again to give me credits so I can start playing, but....Nothing Happens and I can't start without having to plug in my Xbox control, pressing the "Coin" button on the control and disconnecting it and reconnecting the IPAC2.  This is a hassle and sucks.  I have tried a different button and microswitch and still nothing.  I have even wired my Coin door switch to it and it still does nothing.

Any suggestions or if someone has had this problem before, please any help would be appreciated.  I am so close to finishing, Thanks a million!!!!

Do you have that button mapped as a credit button in the in-game UI?

Yes, that button is programmed as the 1Coin button in the Interactive Panel Designer Program that is supplied by Ultimarc in their supplied CD

I was asking if it was configured as a coin buttom within mameox ( or whatever version you're using on the xbox).

In that case, I have no clue.  How would I find out and if I need to do it, How would I go about that.  What I do know is that the credit button used on the Xbox controller is the back button, which works perfect on the controller.  The mod on the Xbox is the Xecutioner 2.

Thanks for your input and help

All right.
I don't have an ipac, but I can help.

I have my xbox controller connect to my pc using the XBDC drivers.
I found that the back button is reported as button 8 in windows,
so you would need to press button 8 to regester a credit in mameox.

This is what windows is reporting as the xbox button mapping:

A = button 1
B = button 2
X = button 3
Y = button 4
Black = button 5
White = button 6
Start = button 7
Back = button 8
Left stick = button 9
Right stick = button 10
Left Trigger = button 11
Right Trigger = button 12

If you were wondering why your credit button worked at the mameox splash screen
that displays "insert coin", it is because you don't need to press any speficic button to
get to the rom list.

You will probably need to configure your controls within mameox if you already have everything wired up.

To do this, you need to acess the configuration menu.
You do this by selecting a game from the rom list.
Once the game has loaded, you need to press the "back" and "white" buttons at the same time. ( buttons 6 and 8 )

After you bring up the in-game menu, select the " input (general) " option and configure your controls from there.

Before configuring your controls, you should read the "help" text.
You can find it in the main menu by pressing "start" at the rom list screen.
This will show you all of the buttons on the xbox controller do within mameox.

Thanks for all this info, but let me ask a few questions before I program all my buttons and get everything all screwed up.  Since all my other buttons work flawless, do I still have to program those?  Can I just program the "back" button?  Would it be the same if I program it to the number 8 key on the keyboard as opposed to the numer 5, which it is currently at?  Thanks again for all the help

I don't see any problem with that.

You won't have to do anything if they are working correctly.

I have tried programming the back key to both the number 8 on the top of the keyboard and the number 8 on the number key pad and neither seemed to do the trick.  What else would be suggested?  Thanks

Sometimes MAME ox can be difficult to configure.  Mine was set up once that every time I pressed the punch button, it would save the game.  It's very easy to mess up the configs.

Physically, it looks like the switch itself is working just fine.  So it is probably software related.  What I would do is find an alternate xbox as a test and install a FRESH copy of MAMEOX.  Then test the button.  If it works, then it's definitely your config.  Reinstalling a Fresh copy on your existing Xbox may not help, as the save files and configs are sometimes hidden, and only a format will wipe it out completely.

On the other hand, it could be a defective ipac to xbox adapter cable.  But highly unlikely.

I finally figured it out, thanks for all the pointers and for responding.  What I did after I configured the button to other keys, I noticed the keyboard stroke was different than the actual IPAC switch number.  The Back key on the controller ended up being the keyboard key next to the number 1 under the ESC key.  Now I can finish my MAME cabinet with no worries.  Thanks for pointing me in the right direction
