I have been watching ebay for awhile. 1+ year.  Anyway.  Good luck.  I saw just one gun go for about $85.  2 guns push way over $100.  The auctions go slow until the last day, then within the last hour the price sky rockets.

Personally I've never bought these before, but have a friend who paid $140 for 2.

I've been watching both those auctions. I skipped the two guns cause they are "untested". I know the pots need to be changed out, but didn't want more trouble than I could handle (or figure out).

You contacted the seller on the 2 guns then?  Or you just assume the pots need replacing?

Didn't you just PM me the same thing!?

When I see "untested" I assume that means they tested them and they are broken   :'(

Search the forum... the pots need to be changed to a different type to make them compatiable with various joystick hacks. (I am assuming you are hooking these up to a PC for MAME). This is independent to the condition of the guns.

I guess you don't need to touch the pots than, according to 1-Up's hack.  Whoo.... that's a relief. Assuming they work in the first place  ;D

So what would it take to go to a toy store, buy some toy machine guns, and hack them up to work like the terminator 2 guns? Seriously, I'm curious about that.

Depends on wether or not you expect the recoil to work.  Also there is a button towards the barrel for the grenade launcher.   The major concern is authenticity.

Aside from that, not much.

You would have to slice it open, and find away to secure it to the joystick shaft.  Because other than the stuff mentioned above, thats all it is.

You would have to be concerned about the durability of the gun.  If I recall correctly, its all metal.  Long time ago, I bet you could find a gun sturdy enough to be a candidate.  I had one of those super realistic UZI battery powered squirt guns.  That would have been a good candidate.

But on the other hand, I don't have a T2 gun myself, so I am not an authority.

OT
People have considered using a toy gun as replacement housing for the ACTLabs gun, since it looks like a toy anyhow.  The problem there is mounting the internals of the ACTLabs gun into your toy gun.

Hm.. I haven't hooked mine up yet, but I'm not sure if there *is* a good way or a way at all to hook up the recoil anyways.  I got 2 of 'em off eBay for about $40 each (averaged price of 2 from individual auctions).

1 more and it's Beast Busterin' time :o

re: recoil

I thought 1up had some modified t2 mame code, that made the led's blink when it was time to recoil, and via relay/transistor switching circuit he was able to  hook up the recoil solenoid... or did I just dream all of that (or was it controlled via parallel port?)

That's what I was going to do a few weeks back. Take a USB analog joystick, remove the top handle, and basicly glue/bondo a  hacked playstation gun to the top (just cause the trigger buttons are already wired).  Analog sticks move forward, back, left, and right. T2 guns move forward, back, twist left, and twist right. It would feel/look pretty stupid that way.  I'm gonna try again with an analog stick that twists, but they are at least $40 and the twist may be digital (not analog). At a certain cost you may as well get the authentic control.

You could go a twistygrip like route... and try engineer your own base. Spins left and right, and leans up and down. Sounds like a pain to me.

You're not dreaming . . . recoil's been done, just not sure if it was 1Up or Poonga or someone else working on it.

So people actually like the T2 game?  Personally I think that game played like hot buttered --I'm attempting to get by the auto-censor and should be beaten after I re-read the rules--

WOW!

And I thought $120 for 2 guns was alot!

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3227471177&category=13718

I'm having 2 of these shipped to me right now for $60.  The guy in the above bid has -1 feedback I'm guessing if he has any kind of brain it will be -2 feedback very soon.

Look at 1UP's site.  He used a Microsoft Sidewinder Dual Strike to interface with a T2 gun.  I bought 2 of them online a few weeks ago for under $20 each.  Turned on its side, you can turn it left / right and up / down.  Unlike a joystick, it moves like a T2 gun.  It is plastic and don't know how much abuse it would stand up to but should be able to mount any gun in place of the right hand control and tilt it on its side.  If I don't wind up getting a real T2 gun to interface with it I'll eventually give it a try.

The big deal with the T2 guns IMHO is the recoil.  I would think anyone could hack a play gun to some pots or a joystick to get it to work.  It's the synced recoil that makes the diffrence!

Anyone know if the recoil part of the T2 guns can be replaced (and are the parts still available)?  I have a couple of the T2 guns, but the recoil mechanism is broken in both guns.

I believe Midway just used pinball coils for the guns.  I contacted Happ (who owns all the Midway stuff now) to ask if they still make the specific coil for the guns, and they said they do not.  You might just be able to use any pinball coil, I dunno...

Howard C is supposed to be working on a wrapper for Mame to allow rumble controllers thru DirectX.  This could possibly be applied to things like Q*bert, Outrun, T2 etc.  This would make it easy for anyone to get the recoil by hacking a rumble gamepad or something.  I do have Dave Widel's mame driver for the LED hack (you'll have to compile it into Mame yourself) and I have sucessfully used it to power the recoil on my guns!  I am planning to put up a schematic of the circuitry required on my site soon...

As for making your own guns, I originally bought the Dual Strikes with the intention of turning it on it's side and gluing a toy uzi in place of the right control handle as someone mentioned above.  Luckily, I came across an amazing dutch auction of about 20 T2 guns on ebay, and managed to pick up two of them for $50!!!  8)  Since I had the Dual Strikes already, I used them for the interface, which just happened to work out really well.

I would suggest for anyone who wants to buy the guns, look for completed auctions to get a good idea of the price you should be prepared to pay.  If you've got some patience, keep watching ebay and if you see a "buy it now" price under $50 each, GO FOR IT!!

Also, these guns are not just for playing T2.  You can play any gun game with them.  And it's way cooler with the recoil!  If you've ever played T2 on a well-maintained machine, then you know why it was great!  It was one of the early games to use actual images and digitized voices of movie actors, and was a cool adaptaion of the movie too.  Many fond memories of playing this in college...

Gonna be alot of competition from guys on this board to get a set of cheap T2 guns. In the meanwhile, I picked up a bunch of dual strikes for around $10 a piece, seller agreed to adjust the shipping.

The gun I'm hacking on top is a playstation light gun with recoil. I'll just hook into the keyboard LEDS on the IPAC and see if how that works out. I'm not expecting much, so I shouldn't be to disappointed.

I settled for 2 Revolution X guns. In some respects this is better for me as they are a smaller unit. Got them for $71, prolly add another $40 to ship them to Oz. Hope they have the same internals as the T2 guns.
