Do your neighbors hate you?
« on: August 18, 2008, 09:12:07 pm »
I've been hitting my cabinet hard for the past few weeks, but I actually have a few hours in a day to work on it.  My wife gets home from work about 5:30.  We make and eat dinner.  It's 7:30 usually before I can start working on anything.  So for the past few weeks I've been out using my jigsaw, router and/or drill on something nearing a daily basis.  My neighbors must be getting so sick of listening to it.  I think it really is pretty impolite.

It's summertime. The sun hasn't even set yet. It's not impolite. It's cool that your considering your neighbors, but your allowed to do what your doing. They MIGHT hate you, but who cares...

Hell, I think my 8am lawn mowing neighbor needs to be more considerate, but I understand that 8am may be his only time to do that kind of work.

right, but if he mowed his lawn every morning you might be somewhat less understanding.   ;D  I'm sure that when someone's power tools were screaming away in the front yard until 10:00pm for a night or two nobody thought anything of it.  But while I'm sure they know I'm not breaking any noise ordinances or anything, someone's probably ready to come over and stick my router [censored by Saint].

p.s. Saint didn't really censor that.  I just thought it would be funny to write.   ;D

On weekdays I work until 9:30 PM in the garage - I think that's reasonable and it's not every night... maybe twice a week on average on the weeks I do work on a project.  Anyway, I don't think you are being rude.

I don't have a garage, though.  I'm on my driveway.  And I usually push it to 10, cos I usually can't even get started until 8ish.  I don't know.  If it was one of my neighbors, by now I think I'd be like,"Are you kidding me?  Is this just going to go on every night from now on?  What in god's name is he doing over there?"

But part of the reason I was hitting it so hard is that I was hoping to complete it before school started back up.  School has started back up now, so I'll have to slow down now.  Also, I'm getting pretty close to done with power tools.  So hopefully they'll all forget what a bastard I am.   ;D

I've been working about 8 hours a day for the last two weeks trying to get mine done before school starts. For me that isn't until the 25th, but I'm running out of time. I usually work until about 9:30. I'm painting right now, so no tool noises, but I have the radio on (sometimes rather loud  8)). I thought about the neighbors for a bit, then decided I didn't really care. I wouldn't worry about it. If they want you to stop they should say something.

My neighbors indeed dislike me but all of my cabs have been refurbs & mods.........I only used an 18V Milwaukee with a hole saw so perhaps its for other reasons.

Just invite the neighbors over when the cabinet is done.  They will understand what all the noise was about.

That whole "be nice to your neighbor" thing is really over rated.  ;D

Consider the mortgate payment you make every month before doing something drastic like changing your schedule to please them. Besides, one project in 5 1/2 years is hardly enough racket to piss them off.   :P :dunno

Yes, but not because of tool noise.  Mostly because in MA the word "neighbor" actually means "the piece of crap that lives next door".

Just think of all the noise you will be making when you start to play games on that baby. Add a few sub-woofers and turn it up, they will be begging you to turn on your power tools again.  ;D

I recently got a new house and we're currently finishing it. We stop using powertools after 10pm and usually we don't even work at all after 8pm. Still one time a neighbour comes over looking pretty agitated growling at us that we should stop working since it was 11pm already. We were putting tiles in and I gues that the hammering of driving the tiles in the glue was going through the floor/walls. No one complained about the powertools we used prior to that (to cut the tiles to shape) :P

It's a whole new neighbourhood anyway where there are people at work virtually non-stop every day.

Hell,  around here it doesn't get dark until 10PM during the Summer.  Luckily,  my neighbors are all pretty cool... and even better I have a garage to work in.  I've used a jigsaw until 2AM.  That said,  I had my wife cut in to a piece of wood while i went out to the street to listen to how loud it was.  Lets say that the neighbors would have to be EXTREMELY anal with their windows open to even hear the noise.

shmokes is in Miami, no one in their right mind has the windows open in August in Miami. If they do, their brain is probably too cooked to hear a router. By the way, right now at midnight, it's 83 with a heat index of 92. I think if someone was annoyed after 9pm and asked you to stop perhaps you should, but if they hate you for it, they'd find something else to hate you for if you didn't do this. And don't invite them over to play.

And if that is going on I think you're going to be the one complaining about an entirely different type of noise.

Bah, ever since reading this thread I'm paranoid that my neighbors are annoyed with me.  I had the router going last night until 9:30 for the third night in a row...  the lady next door kept coming out in the backyard and I thought she was going to say something.  I don't think it's that loud since I'm in the garage (with the door open though).  They will just have to deal with it I guess and if she does ever say anything I'll just politely say that it's the only time I have to work in the garage and if my two small kids can sleep through it then it must not be that loud.  Plus, my wife is super sensitive to loud noise (because of the kids) and if it doesn't bother her then I seriously doubt I'm loud at all...

Instead of worrying about them hating you maybe you should invite them to a cab inauguration party. That would make them think differently about the noise. I had a neighbour in Amsterdam who used power tools every evening for more then a year. We were always wondering if he was building an SM cellar or something

My neighbors. I hate them. They are up early, have the garage open, their ---smurfing--- air compressor on - and it’s loud and most of the time that air compressor is accompanied by the blaring rumble of their ---goshdarn--- car stereo that is alos on so the --missioncontrols-- in the garage can hear it. apparently they have never heard of ipods or portable musical equipment! I’m fed up. they have no sense of consideration. They must think that no one can hear them, their stereo or whatever the hell they are working with IN that garage to make all the goddanm noise that they are making.
I think it might be a machine shop in making or some form of manufacturing as these people don’t seem to have a job anymore either.
It’s nice outside.
It WOULD be nice to open the windows, take in the nice air, turn off the AC. Maybe rest on the couch for lunch and enjoy the quiet. IF THERE WAS SOME! I can’t open the windows because all i hear is their noise, their stereo or their drills and cutters! ---steaming pile of meadow muffin---!

They are THE ONLY noisy people on this whole street! I not a spring chicken but I’m not too old to hand down some serious vengeful ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- either. These folks live a few houses down and are still this noisy that I can’t enjoy what I have worked for!

SOMEONE, ANYONE please tell these people to SHUT THE ---fudgesicle--- UP!

Their well being, home and physical possessions depend on me not losing anymore of my ---smurfing--- mind.
I have plenty of experience in dasterdly destructive deeds and that they wont know who or how but they sure as hell will know WHY, and then it will be too late.
Their address is 273 Spicewood drive.in Meridian. Drop them a line, email them if you know them, drive by and tell them their neighbors are plotting their demise! I COULD try to ask them to stop, be considerate, to stop acting like they are the only ones on the ---smurfing--- block but then, if they gave me a ---That which is odiferous and causeth plants to grow--- attitude or refused, they would know it was I who ruined their life later down the line.
Plus, I am sure I am not the only one irritated. I watch out my window, I look around. other people are looking at them in disgust, closing their windows as well. I am NOT the only person ticked off! so, this is your chance to be a do-gooder instead of just ranting and raving. Help them, help me. I am surely about to blow and it could be devestating. VERY.

That person is a serious coward.  You should find 273 Spicewood drive, go a few houses up the street, and set up a sewer excavation.

I don't think he's coward, he just does not want to lose his ace-in-the-hole (screwing them over if they do not stop the noise) by going up to them and having them tell him to F-off, as they most certainly will do.  As he said, obviously the guy who would go over and complain would be the prime suspect in anything fishy that went on from that point on. He must not feel like going over and telling them to be more quiet is going to do anything. Some people you just cannot be nice to and need to learn the hard way.

I do think he should send a letter without his name on it and give them a chance to be more quiet and let them know that there is a problem before acting like a lunatic.

Ace in the hole?  Destruction of private party under the cover of night is an ACE IN THE HOLE?  Only a low life coward would pull that ---steaming pile of meadow muffin---.  If he had a single hair on his nutsack he'd simply walk over and talk with the people.  If he still had problems he'd confront them directly.  Only a real scum bag would sneak around destroying the property of people he doesn't "like".

EDIT: I removed the remarks I'd had re: the new poster above.  Not worth the "drama".  Dude supports the destruction of personal property over being a man and confronting the person himself...I can't change the fact the guy has no sense of personal responsibility,  so why kick it around...

Now I come to a dilemma...

...some ---uvula--- burned me and my friend for $500 ($250 each) on a TV that was off color when we saw it at his place.  He said "the colors just need to be adjusted with the remote"... went to adjust and the remote didn't have batteries.  Of course the remote for his NEW TV had batteries...but they were the wrong size.  Like a couple of Lemmings we dumbasses bought the TV on the guys word that the colors could be adjusted out.

Yes...we're morons...because you know what happened.  Yup...color issue couldn't be adjusted out.  I pull the front off and the damned blue tube (projection screen TV) was all blurry...why?  Because (A) it had FUNGUS growing inside (water cooled) and (B) some moron (likely the scum bag who sold it) had tried to repair it himself...and when they put everything back together they managed not to include the neck rings that were present on all other colors.

Bottom line,  the dude refused to refund the dough,  refused to take back his damaged TV.  I talked to a lawyer friend who said I could sue in small claims court but it would come down to a he said she said and I'd likely lose.

I want to go over and beat the bastard down REAL BAD...but that wouldn't solve the problem and I'd be in jail for sure.

SO...here we are 6  months later...and I am still waiting...

...and if my better judgement fails me some night (drunk perhaps?) I'm considering writing "KARMA'S A ---smurfette--- ---smurf---" really big in his lawn with "Round Up"...

The rub is that doing so,  I invite bad karma in to my life...even though the bastard screwed me good.

EDIT: I almost forgot why I posted this...

...how is this desire of mine any different than what the CL poster proposes?  A real man would go beat the guys ass... right?  What if I was to tell you that I am 6'4" 300 lbs and not bad with putting a beat down on someone and this guy is about 5'5" and MAYBE a buck fifty?  While every time I have EVER gotten ---my bottom--- handed to me it's been by smaller guys than me,  this guy doesn't look the type.   What purpose would it serve other than to make me feel a little better (which I would,  but wouldn't because I am the type of guy who would worry about the injuries I gave to the guy...no winning I tell ya!!).

I guess the conclusion I come to is that I will likely NEVER do anything...I will take it as a lesson and move on with life... which I guess means that I maintain that it's a --cream-filled twinkie-- thing to destroy someones property without at least attempting to resolve the situation face to face.

Right?

We all like to act like we are all angels or could never destroy other peoples stuff if it comes down to it. Some might even go so far as to try to make others think they could never do anything like this while posting on a message board. The fact is you're only kidding yourself trying to act as if you would not get fed-up with a problem that would not seem to end, and if this was the only way to make the situation right, then so be it. I did say send a letter explaining the problem and wait and see if anything changes, and if not...

Did you happen to take pictures of the fungus and missing neck rings?

I certainly don't want to question a lawyer since I'm not one, but civil court is a preponderance of doubt, not 'beyond a shadow of doubt'.   Basically if you're case has merit and is plausible the judge will decide who seems to be telling the truth, and those pictures could really turn the tide!

Could it be that the lawyer just doesn't feel it's worth his time dealing with something that's as little money as this?  I know you said he's a friend, so hopefully he wouldn't be that way.

I was building a house a few years back and ended up with a very unscrupulous builder.  He took his initial payment as well as the second round of payment then left the state.  What he did was he subcontracted out the work to other builders, gave them a little money to get started so I saw work was being done, and then split.  I had contracters coming after ME!  This guy stung at least a dozen people the same way.

I went to four lawyers and the first three didn't want anything to do with it.  The fourth sat me down and explained that the other three lawyers knew it would be a lot of work for very little money in return, especially since the guy fled the state, so they just said they were too busy.  And this was for thousands of dollars, not just a couple hundred.

Point being, you should try taking it before a judge yourself, can't hurt.

You're definitely right though, this guy screwed you and your friend and if you did act on your gut and emotions he'd not only have you arrested, but then probably sue YOU!  And the sick part is, he'd probably win too.

Well its a crappy situation no matter how you cut it. You never know how the neighbor will react until you broach the subject with them. Even if they are a tattooed biker dude, they could react in a pleasant and empathetic way. Of course, they could also tell you to ---fudgesicle--- off and make even more noise.

I totally understand the fact that he 'just wants it to go away'. There is no easy solution to trouble neighbors. I confronted my neighbor about 'the problem', and it still stayed a problem. It was just out in the open that I hated him and made neighborhood walks even more uncomfortable. Not saying that the solution works here, but my problem wasn't solved until another neighbor brought a 'problem solver' (AKA, gun) into the situation.

...Of course, I'm not advising that a 'problem solver' is a good idea...unless you aren't a party to it.  >:D ;D

My opinion is that's why thugs and --missioncontrols-- get away with pushing people around... they know most people are honest and won't break the law, and they are a thug and have no regard for the law.  So they know most people won't do anything in return.   Like I said, the really sick part is that these are the type of people that would sue and win if someone came after them.

I've never really had any neighbor issues.  There have been some times when I had power tools running in the evening, but it's not that often, and like someone else said, they mow at like 6AM at times.  Now if they were mowing every day... or I was making noise every night, yeah something should be said.

Ya never know... if the neighbor complains about sawing, drilling and pounding and a person apologizes and then shows them what they are building, could be an ice breaker and start up a new friendship!  Very few guys I know wouldn't think an arcade isn't the coolest thing to have!  Might even have him sawing and pounding along side you building his own!  Then the REAL problem comes into play... WIVES!  Piss them off and life could be a lot worse than confronting the biker dude who's making noise! ;)

Dude...it's been 6 months...

If I was going to reek havok on the guys lawn or his TV,  don'tcha think I'd have done it already?

Bah...like I said,  it would take me being real drunk and a lapse of judgement AND being near the guys property to do anything (not going to happen,  he lives about 15 miles from here).

I've thought about killing different people at different times too...did I do it?  Hell no.

That's completely understandable and I think everyone does that.  I know I've had some thoughts and fantasies about things I'd like to do or see happen to some people I know, but that's as far as it goes.

In a way isn't it healthy to mentally visualize your anger and then contemplate the actions, then get over it?  I'd think it's the people that bottle things up are the ones that tend to explode and do crazy things.

Let's also say that your problem was a violent pair of pit bulls and that guy's problem is some noisy neighbors.  The two are on entirely different planes of urgency.

Same end result though. If it takes effort on their part to correct the situation, it will not be corrected. A person willing to disrupt the neighborhood like that isn't gonna go out of their way to correct things.

I don't really agree there.  The noise is annoying but not dangerous.  There is no real necessity to be quiet.  Now, to not kill children, that can be called necessary.

Perhaps you should send her over to the neighbors? Then Maybe they'd all hate you, but at least you'd have some peace and quiet...

Top three reasons we moved back to NY from FL after 2 years:
1. Too freakin' hot (91 degrees and humid for 6 straight months)
2. Too small lots (too close to neighbors, will eventually hate them)
3. No basements (can't hide from wife and where would arcade cabs go?)

Depends where in NY; and there's lots of places with basements. Personally, except for rare situations - like an old buddy of mine whose land is hilly and his basement has a door on a lower part of land than the first floor is on so there's no steps to fall down - I'd prefer an extension or just extra room of some sort. But I don't live in a dense urban sprawl region, either.

Who the hell wants to lug heavy cabs up and down a basement anyway. Get yourself a decent house with an extra room and set up your game room. Basements are old, dingy and smell like garbage.

I *LIKE* having my games in the basement and, with two exceptions, have had no problem moving games down there. It doesn't disturb anybody upstairs when I have them all running and gives me more far more space than any room (or two or three) on the main floor.

My basement must be an exception to your rule though, because it is actually the same age as the rest of the house.

And it doesn't smell like garbage.

I've always never had to "hide" my cabs in an attempt to not "disturb" anyone. My family and people I have known have always welcomed game playing of all kinds and it is accepted to have them in the main house and not having to bury them in a basement.

I meant no basements in south Florida because the water table is too high. There are basements in NY, one think that makes me happy.

Who the hell wants to lug heavy cabs up and down a basement anyway. Get yourself a decent house with an extra room and set up your game room. Basements are old, dingy and smell like garbage.

My basement doesn't smell, but it is kept just dingy enough so no one disturbs ME while I'm down there.

You see, there you go again, putting your own personal spin on things and judging based on your limited perspective.

My friends and family love the game room.

How many cabinets do you have in that extra room in your "decent" house ?  Where do you put the pool table ?  The bar ?

How many people do you share that house with ? Any kids who may have bedtimes after which you want to play or work on games ? A wife who may want to read a book or watch TV without feeling the deep bass of Space Invaders or Asteroids ?

I am becoming convinced that you are our dearly (wish he were still) departed Giants/pit bull fan -- who else would begin a sentence with "I've always never" ?

I guess we all just need a warm safe place to lay our head and feel safe in our own mind.

Sounds like a cowardly way to deal with the situation to me.  At least have the balls to confront the guy.  But whatever.  People deal with crap their own way.  Some folks have learned personal responsibility from their parents,  others haven't.  I don't blame you...

ok I have to say something about this then I will go back and read the rest!!

bb gun and pellets??? sorry but if you plan on busting through the window and then the surafe of a plasma screen you need to use the bb gun with what it was meant a BB as it is usually a hard metal like steel in copper coating and pellets are soft lead like substances and just flatten out.

bb's vs soft stretchy stuff =bb loosing
pellets to shoot some one but BB's for shooting out hard plastic glass what not's. ok I am going back to read the rest of this very interesting thread

(by the way I would try and let everyone know what kind of a ---meecrob--- that guy is so no one else gets taken by him in some other way.)

I think an even bigger reason we don't have basements is that we don't need basements.  You'll find that there are also no basements in Phoenix, AZ.  I think it has to do with foundations needing to be set below the frost line.  Since it never freezes, home builders don't go to the expense of building a basement.  Of course, the water table thing very well may make it so that even if you did want a basement in South Florida it would be out of the question.  But I think you probably have a basement in NY because you need one, more than because you can have one.

That is why houses have basements.  That's also why really old houses have basements that clearly were never meant to be used for much.  Go into a 150 year old house up here and you'll see why.  It's basically a hole walled up with rocks and mud with a mud floor.  Not even usable as storage.

My house is built into a slope in a way that from the street, it is a single story. From the back, it is 2-story. I have ground level access to both floors. Moving games into the basement is as simple as wheeling them into the garage.  ;D

And no, my basement does not stink. If your basement stinks, then you need to take a shower once in a while and take out the trash too.

Good save. Some of the ignorant might actually buy that.

Hell no.

I think the moral of the story is don't buy Televisions used, and especially Rear Projections used.

I thought earthen cellars were dug into a hillside with the front entrance at ground level but the back below grade?  The ones I'm talking about are just like slab foundations but predate concrete.  They're made up of rocks placed by hand.

Oh I see. Yeah, I missed a couple things. Although, I don't know if all earthen cellars were accessible only from the outside. I got the idea from my grandma that theirs had stairs to it from the inside, also.

Lots of them have entrances into the house.  They're normal basements, really, but built into the grade of the hillside.

Incorrect.  There are homes with basements here.  In fact, that's one of the criteria we have for buying a home next year.

Of course there are.  That's not what I meant.  It's not like you're forbidden from building a basement just because you don't have to have one.  But basements are a helluva lot more expensive than a second-story, and they're less marketable (lack of sunlight, for example).  But where it freezes, the foundation of the home must be below the frost line.  In NYC, for example, that's four feet . . . and the foundation has to go deeper than that.  And many places get a lot colder than NYC.  So they build basements there as a matter of course, not just because someone wants a basement.

Went into a basement 4-5 houses down from mine... identical house, really, except their basement is like 2' deeper than mine.  Have to say I was a bit frustrated as ceiling height is a little low in my basement.   :banghead:  Can't think of a good reason for the difference.

The foundation doesn't have to stand on a basement. In the Netherlands we put our houses on concrete pillars that are rammed into the ground until they stand on something solid. The foundation is then put on top of these pillars.

I've lived in several houses with basements. I wish my new house had one, but indeed the resale value is low since you can not use a basement for much. I guess a garage can have basically the same function and it's cheaper to build has a higher resale value.

I hate my neighbors, but they don't hate me.

Same here!

I sometimes think that I am too considerate and they just live their life doing what the hell they like. Luckily they are not noisy often, but they seem to have a blow out once a month!

Well, I am a drummer. If I wanna get behind the skins after 8 PM or so, I actually go over to the neighbor's house and make sure that I won't be disturbing them. I doubt that they can hear the drumming inside their house anyway, but it CAN be heard if you are standing outside MY house. They have never complained or even said anything to me about it in the past. But then-again, I almost never play past dark. I always make a note to myself to ask them because I know I sure as hell wouldn't want someone making a bunch of noise when I am trying to relax or whatever.

That's how I feel, and why I'm concerned about my use of power tools evening after evening.  It would start irritating me, and I think you gotta kind of try to create the world that you would like to live in, even if others aren't participating.  It's just a healthy way to live, IMO.

Not really.  Like I said, it would irritate me if the neighbors were doing that for hours on-end, night after night.  The golden rule should be enough to tell me that I'm being a pest.  Furthermore, many people dislike confrontation.  Even if I go over all nice-like to the neighbor, maybe she tells me it doesn't bother her, but really she is irritated as hell, but feels like she has no place telling me what to do.  Or maybe she just doesn't want to rock the boat and have a neighbor who dislikes her.  Maybe she says it's fine because I'm being so polite, but two minutes after I leave he regrets it, but would feel like an ass coming over and saying, "Actually, I don't know why I said that.  You're really bothering me.

There's not really much use going and asking the neighbors something that I probably already know.  I've just started taking breaks, i.e., if I'm sawing all evening for two or three nights in a row, I'll take a day off.  And I'm trying to finish by 9-9:15 instead of 10.

I actually have a neighbor problem that I never knew about since I just moved into a better house in a new neighborhood. There seems to be a few 18-22 year olds across the street who seem to be into motor cycles. They leave their house and excessively rev their engines, they come home late at night and excessively rev their engines. It can be sunday morning very early and instead of just getting on the bike and going where they need to go, they sit there for a while bothering the neighborhood "reving their engines". I have thought of a number of ways to handle this problem, but the way that seems most satisfying to me would be to actually buy a bike, sit in front of their bedroom one morning while they sleep, and rev that baby until the engine blows. Maybe then they would get the idea of how much of a problem it is. :)
