Alternative to lexan
« on: June 09, 2003, 09:26:08 pm »
Was told lexan is good for control panel's because you can do so much with little hassle.  I also heard lexan can scratch fairly easily and turns yellow over time.  I looked at several different samples of stuff to use as the glass covering my monitor.  I forgot what they called it but it had 2 sheets of glass with one sheet of plastic in the middle.  My friend called it safety glass but he wasn't sure.  The stuff did not scratch easily and seemed to be pretty strong.  Would not turn yellow either.

Has anyone else used this stuff anywhere on their cab?  Is it something I could use for my control panel?  Was told this stuff can be cut, drilled etc.  and it would not shatter; but if anything would crack, somewhat like a windshield of a car.

Lexan doesnt yellow, Plexi does.

Lexan does scratch easier then Plexi, but its not like touching it is going to scratch it, there has to be some effort in there.  And usually its nothing that a little plastic polish cant get out.

Hope this helps.

Lexan is tough stuff.....there is a general rule in materials...the harder (scratch resistant) the material is, the more brittle it is (prone to cracking).

Lexan can bend, you can drill it, cut it, saw it......it wont crack.  Its soft and pliable.....and yes, if you do scratch it a little Novus or other type of buffing compound for plastics should work fine......

On the other hand, its also real expensive.....cuz its used as a security tyep of material..ie: instead of glass, cuz you can't break through this stuff...and I believe its technically "bullet proof", but I'm not sure at what thickness..

PS: You can get it cheaply in sheets at mcMaster-carr online.....$27.00 for a large sheet compared to $50 at home depot....

HOwever...I'd much rather work with lexan than deal with the hassles of drilling plexi.....drilling my CP (3/4 MDF and Lexan on top) for 4 players was a PAIN IN THE @SS ENOUGH without having to worry about cracking plexi with each new drilled hole I made..

you don't drill plexi, you cut it with a razor knife...

You /ca/ drill lexi, but you need to run the drill in reverse and melt through the metal... Lexan you dont need to, just barrel through it
