Cp button/stick layout feedback
« on: August 10, 2008, 05:49:32 pm »
Ok I'm about to start drilling into my cp top and before I do I want some second opinions on the placement of everything to make sure I wont run into any problems (I do not want to have to redo this this thing:|).

So what do you guys think?

I guess that this is the type of panel that will play pretty much everything?

Yep, fighters for me and my friends and old school games for my wife. I did try to keep the buttons to a minimum for what I wanted to do.

I have a player 1&2 at the top on the left and right of the cp and in the middle are two admin buttons.

Does anyone think my middle buttons are too high? I want them at a different than the other four buttons but I don't know if they are too high.

Looks fine to me.

To be honest, I tried HEAPS of different layouts using a cardboard mock up, and all of them felt fine.

I would say yours wouldn't be too high, but if you are worried, try mock up using card board.

Personally I don't care for a raised middle button.   I like a lot of old school games and I want the 2 buttons side by side.  Also with that much real estate I would move the joystick buttons over.   Looks too close for my tastes.

I would not mock the whole cp in cardboard but would at least create one half to see if you like the fit/feel.

When you say move the button over do you mean outwards towards the edge of the cp?

The joystick looks too close to the buttons.  I just measured my cab and I am 5" from the center of the joystick to the center of the first hole.    What I did was go to a few arcades and measure the joystick to button distance and see what felt right.

Looking again at your cp maybe the location of the 7th button is throwing my perception off.  BTW, I thought that most 7th buttons were on the other side?

Thanks for the input.

I based the dimensions of the controls off of this site:
http://www.kowal.itcom.pl/ArcadeParts_pliki/asCP.htm

As for the seventh button, I put it there for a couple of reasons, one was to emulate a neo geo button layout and the other was to have one button that was in a more traditional location for one button games.

I have a similar layout.  As far as I've seen, the 7th button usually goes on the left, right where you have it. I have my middle's offset, but maybe not quite as much as yours.

It works okay. I think I would have been just as happy having them all even, with the thumb offset. But I've had no major problems so far.

Do you have a link to your cp or could you post some pics?

  • Yeah, owning a MAME cab only leads to owning real ones. MAME just isn't good enough. It's a gateway drug.

I'm the oddball with his seventh button on the right side. ;D
