Cat 5 with quick disconnects
« on: August 01, 2008, 04:29:26 pm »
I notice that quite a few people are using cat 5 to do clean wiring jobs in their control panels.  I also notice that quick disconnects are always rated for 16-22 gauge wire.  Do you have any trouble getting a good tight crimp on the 24 gauge wire used in cat 5?  I thought maybe cat 6 or 7 might use a thicker gauge wire, but they don't appear to.

Im not using cat5 but I just got dome making some terminals with 24 gage wire using quick connects rated for 22 as you say.

Its not really a problem, just make sure you get a good solid crimping.

In a pinch, fold the cat5 over on itself to double the size, then crimp.

Personally, I don't trust stakons on solid wire.
But wasn't it fun to think you won the lottery, just for a second there???

we used them on my friend's panel with cat 5 and it worked jsut fine. we just folded the ends of the wires in half and crimped them very tight with long handled channel lock pliers.  no problems at all

They look a little funky since the wire is so skinny compared to the crimp.  But mine hold just fine.  My entire panel has cat 5.

TIP:
I got mine for dirt cheap here:  http://www.cablewholesale.com/catalog/cat5enetworkcables.htm

I was able to color coordinate my cables which made wiring easier.  They have tons of colors to choose from.  I just got at few 7ft booted cat5e cables (I cut off the ends) in several colors.  They go for $1.60 each which is dirt cheap!
