Going to some arcades today - want a DK - any advice?
« on: July 31, 2008, 08:06:37 am »
I'm currently on vacation in Salisury Beach, MA.  There are a bunch of arcades in the area (one in Salisbury Beach and several in Hampton, NH) and I'm going to them all today in the hopes that one of them has a broken down Donkey Kong (or Popeye or other Nintendo cab) that they are willing to part with for $50-$100.

Any tips on what to do?  Is it considered bad form to just go in and ask?

  • Yeah, owning a MAME cab only leads to owning real ones. MAME just isn't good enough. It's a gateway drug.

bad form? Hell no. I walk in most places and ask to speak with the owner, then proceed to ask if they have any broken or empty cabinets, or games that just don't make them any money they want to get rid of.

Lately, the answer is, "I just hauled off four to the dump."

The last four in question were Soul Calibur, a Neo Geo 1-slot with Metal Slug, a Galaga, and something else.

What makes me mad is my mother knows this person and I told her to pass along the word to them (about 6 years ago) that I was looking for cabinets.

Yup.  I'm just getting this now.  Oh well - I struck out too.  They told me when something breaks they just send it back to the manufacturer and there isn't anything "out back" or "in the basement".  Looks like I'll just stick to craigslist or eBay until I find one.  I suppose I could build from scratch but those look a little more complicated than your average cab...
