365 Free PC Games list
« on: July 23, 2008, 08:23:13 pm »
All,

The September 2008 issue of PCGamer has a nice article starting on pages 38-49 listing 365 free games.  Most are downloadable/executable (some web-based) but there's some nice categories such as Physics, "Press Up to Jump," "I Love the 80s," "One-Click Ponies (single button required)", "Gravity," and "Ohkubo (space shooters)."

The cover has "Fallout 3" printed on it...

Update:  apparently the entire list is also on the web at http://www.gamesradar.com/f/365-days-of-free-games/a-2008071714293190000

This is just one example... and it's pretty darn cool.

ok, so we need you to review each game and report back on whether it's cab controls friendly.

When can you have that completed by?

I just was browsing through this list of free games and found this one. This is totally addictive and I would LOVE to play this on my cab full-screen. Is there any way to extract these flash-based games from their ad-heavy web sites and just play them offline? Even if I could just download the source and run it in the Flash developer software (which I have). Check out this great game... it should be cab-friendly, since it uses only one "button" (space bar), but playing it from the web site is totally lame... I want it full screen on my cab! http://www.thegameslist.com/playgame/204/Metro.Siberia

I was wondering the same thing - I seem to recall there are methods for extracting Flash animations from websites, but not sure about full-on games.

As I've been messing around, I continue to find some more great stuff in this list that I'm going to install on my finished cab.

UPDATE: Metro.Siberia was fun... nice catch.

Thank you! This is a great list. I have tried many of these games in the past and several of the better ones are already on my cabinet. Many are cabinet friendly. For example, Torus Trooper is cabinet friendly. It's nice to see such a big list of them.

I think I posted about Gravitron in the software subgroup once. I don't remember it being adware as suggested here. It's just a well done indy remake. His r-type remakes are good too and are cabinet friendly.

I'll take some time later this summer and go through this whole list one at a time. I'm always on the lookout for free (and better yet, open-source) games that run well on my cabinet. I see lots of familiar names on that list, but many I've never heard of too.

BTW, I'm highly addicted to Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory. I mean, really, really addicted. It's better than Team Fortress 2 if you ask me. But that one isn't arcady or cabinet friendly.

Blasphemy!  Better than TF2?!!

:)

I agree with you - I'm slowly making my way through this list (about 5-10 per day if I have the time) and looking for the downloadable ones that will work great on a cab.  I didn't get any alert either for Gravitron for adware but maybe I missed it.  I'll try to keep this thread updated occasionally when I find a cab-friendly freebie.

Yes indeedy. I like the pace, physics, and feedback better. Graphics aren't as nice, but playability is better for me. TF2 has some good humor tho.

I should qualify my position by stating that I'm not a huge fan of the Quake  / Unreal multiplayer games, so my viewpoint is probably different than the mainstream.

I'll try to do the same. I think that Kenta Cho's games are generally cabinet friendly but I'll have to check again.

I was addicted to that for a few years, I was even in one of the top tier clans playing competively in various tournaments.  I still keep the game installed and go back to it every now and then, but now just about every server is filled with bots which I find really annoying.

Yeah, I've been playing heavily for about a year and half now and so far I've only found about 4 servers that are really good. Two are clan servers and the other two are just a good group of people to play with. It takes the right mix of rules, maps, mods, player attitudes and player skill level to make for a good server. It's my experience that it's not easy to find a server with the right balance. PM me if you want the IPs for those servers so you can dust off your old MP40.

On a side note, a game based on the W:ET engine called True Combat: Elite is an excellent special ops game. Graphics are great and gameplay is very different. I really like that game alot too.

Not only are both those games excellent and free, but they run on Linux and Macintosh as well as your usual Windows.

Regarding the adware:  Kaspersky says this:

detected: adware not-a-virus:AdWare.Win32.AdMedia.ax   URL: http://xout.blackened-interactive.com/dump/new/GraviTron.rar//GraviTron/GraviTron.exe

It's been awhile, have you found anymore games yet?

Check in the software sub-forum. There's been some discussion on indy cab-friendly freeware there recently. I've been weeding through alot of shooters... there's sooooo many out there...

In the end, that 365 games list was a bit of a disappointment to me (in terms of arcade cabinets). So many were web/flash games and that won't work well for me on a cab.

There are many ways to do that but the ethics involved are beyond my scope of knowledge.  As far as that goes, it may be host and game dependent.   You can find the games on most hosts by looking at the source code of the page when your game is loaded in your browser.  If you find a bare .swf file link -
for example:
http://games.mochiads.com/c/g/metro-siberia/metro_siberia.swf
-you can do a File-->Save as...
Then you can load it in your full screen flash player.
