Xbox 360

My brother is giving me his old 360.  So far the only issue is the dreaded DRE.  Is that an easy fix?  He has sent it back once but took like a month to get it back.

Next question is which mod chip?

Thx

I do not have the 360 yet, does the DRE give you the red ring...thingie?  I do not think so..............

The one below does not meet my needs.  The only thing I got from that one is that 360's do not have a mod chip yet.  So  I will make my question easier for you.....................................

360 has mod chips depending on what your purposes are.  If you're looking for a homebrew community like the one that created Xbox Media Center for the original Xbox, then no there are no mod chips.  If you're looking to be able to play illegal copies of games, then yes there are mod chips.

Well then, yes, there are mod chips that will allow you to play DVD+R copies of games.  I don't own a 360, though, let alone a modded 360, so I can't be of much service.

Disc Read Errors are ---smurfy--- for the 360.  Basically you need to buy another working DVD Drive (preferably of the same brand and model) and then essentially hack your 360 and dump the drives key and firmware.  Then you can take your new drive and hack it to your old drives firmware and key.  However, this is a great time to mod your 360, and unless you are unfortunate enough to get a Hitachi V79FK drive, you will NOT need a mod-chip.

Find out which drive you have:

If you are going to get into Xbox360 modding you really need to get on XBINS if you haven't already.  You can find good programs for it by searching for Xbins Automated on google.

You will also want to have a Via 6421 Pci Sata adaptor if you have a Samsung or Ben-Q drive.  These communicate with all drives, whereas onboard Sata like Nforce can only communicate with certain Hitachi drives.  These are less than $20 with shipping and will save you a major headache to have it in your computer.  This is the one I use.

That should get you started.

Okay, here is my update!  No red ring of fire!!  But it will not read the two games sent to me.  Yes, they are somewhat scratched but not bad.  My bro bought 09 College and it would not play, thus the reason he gave it to me.  I put in a fairly clean dvd and it plays w/o issue?

Any ideals why games are not playing?  I have not tried a lenes cleaning disc either.

1. laser rails could be to dirty and causing the laser to bind or skip instead of slide smoothly. usually can be heard like a buzz noise.

2. laser eye or "laser mirror on bottom" could have a hair or dust or even a layer of nicotine if your a smoker.

3. laser could be losing strengh and need a pot adjustment to turn the ohms down to increase the lasers power.

4. someone failed a flash and bricked the drive so it no longer reads anything you throw at it.

5. spindle motor is seized and not spinning the disk at all or not fast enough to read right.

6. snake motor is seized and not spinning this would cuase the laser to stay still and not move or not be moving back and forth fast enough.

if your xbox is out of warrenty take the top off and run it with your dvd exposed with it's top off and check to see if it will spin the disk then see if the laser is moving back and forth etc.

post what you find and could go from there but there is many things that make a drive earn dde but almost all drives can be fixed easily.

do not power your 360 motherboard without the drive connected correctly though. so after you remove the top make sure you plug it in before you power the console and dont stare directly down on the laser eye when it is on look at it from a side angle only.

Kinda off topic here, but the word is the cheapie Xbox 360 is going to be $199 in September.

Makes me think it might be time to get one... but is there anything to it besides better looking versions of Xbox 1 games?

If this is how your truly feel then you do NOT need to buy a 360.
