Can I use any type of wire to make an RCA (red & white) cable longer?

I'm planning to cut the cable I have (it's a y-adaptor) in half and then add a few additional feet of wire to it.

for my purposes I don't usually care about the cable as long as it's about 22 gauge or greater.  although I should mention that if an audiophile saw my setup they would probably cry.

So anything should work?  I want to use speaker wire to make the RCA cable longer - will it work?  This is just to hook up my iPod to my MDX through the auxiliary port...

Sure, it will work, but it is always good to use the right cable. RCA type audio connectors are usually wired with the low side as the shield. You would be better off buying the connectors at Radio Shack and chopping up an existing cable. Surely you have a few laying around?

Just make sure the cable is shielded. Not only to improve sound quality but also to keep interference away from your monitor. I assume you're not using the cable for music because then I'd recommend using real interconnects. Even the cheap-but-good ones make a real difference.
