Speaker Grills
« on: June 06, 2003, 04:33:55 pm »
 ???
I am always amazed when I CAN'T find something on the Internet.  I am just about done with my cab.  I have a bunch of speakers installed, including 2 small 2 3/4" speakers I hacked out of a PC Speaker setup.  Problem is I can not find a speaker grill that small.  I need a grill between 2.75"-3.25" (preferably 3").  The peice of wood the speaker is on is only 3.25" wide, so I can't put a bigger grill on the speaker.

I can not find a speaker grill this small.  I checked local stores and all over the internet.  I only found one place on the internet that has square ones that at 3 1/8", but they have a minumum order of 15 peices.  I would have thought that car stereo places would have it (like crutchfield.com) since car tweeters are usually that small, but I can't find anything.  I even checked out things like small fan grills (pctoys.com has some cool looking fan covers - shaped like skulls, alien heads, etc that I figured would look cool and do the job - I found them in a local store but their smallest one is too big).

Does anyone have any ideas of a place on the internet that would sell something a small speaker grill?  Or if anyone has another idea?

Thanks for any help you can give!

Doug

If you can't find one, you could alway make one.  You can buy that speaker grill material..  I forget what it's called.

Now with cup beer holders!

You can cut your own from perf metal with tin snips.  Good way to get covering for irregular shapes or non standard sizes.  Get it at a local supplier or other sources.

I was in the same boat as you and ended up saying screw-it ...  the result wasn't too bad actually ... routed the hole and lined it with T-molding:

I went to Circuit City and asked if they had any (in the car stereo installation place.)  They gave me a set they had lying around.

Good idea, but I have the actual speakers, flush mounted on the wood - and 3 little kids running around who would love to stick their filthy little fingers right through them!  :P  I need some covers.  I went to Circuit City too, no dice.

I actaully used black sewer grates from Home depot.  $2 a piece.  They work great and are easy to install.  Will get a picture up soon.

Why not visit your local car radio store and buy a couple of car speaker grills??

Maybe Radio Shack have something that would do the job??

4" speaker grilles can be order through HAPP controls:

http://www.happcontrols.com/amusement/jukebox/49518100.htm

or square:

http://www.happcontrols.com/amusement/jukebox/49518200.htm

Thanks, but 4" is too big, can't be bigger than 3.25".

And to answer Les, I went to 3 car stereo installers and non of them had anything smaller than 5".  Radio shack as well, smallest they had were 5".

Thanks for the help and ideas everyone.

How about a muffin fan grill. I've used them to cover speakers on a computer case mod before. Note on this grill the mounting holes are 3.25" apart. Should keep out the fingers.

Don't rig it. Do it the right way. Radio Shack sells speaker grills. So do car audio shops. I got the speaker grill for my cabinet from Radio Shack.

As I said, Radio shack doesn't sell anything smaller than 5" (at least my 2 local Shack's and their website).  Same with the car audio dealers near me.

There is a defined RIGHT way to do things now?  ???   (must have missed that thread)  ;)

You could go to your local Bose dealer and try to find a replacement grille for one of the cube speakers.  E.g., the acoustimass/jewel cube speaker has a removable grille that is @3.1"x3.1". You should be able to get one that does not have a Bose tag on it - the acoustimass/jewel cube panel array has two cube speakers, the bottom one with the Bose tag on the grille and the top one without.

Or you could always buy a roll of grille cloth (fairly inexpensive) and buy a foam block (from Michaels, etc...)  from which to punch/cut-out a rectangular frame from and roll your own...

If you do a search for "speaker grilles" (usually spelled with an e I think ;D) you can find circular grilles that size and a little smaller.  The rectangular grilles usually are not smaller than 3.5"x3.5".

Good luck.
