Star Wars flight yoke - wire thru joy or mouse?
« on: March 13, 2002, 07:03:51 am »
???

So, friend of mine is building a MAME to run Star Wars and the like, we're down to just the controls...  Now, cracking open the controller and getting to everything is no problem, however, should we go through wiring it as a joystick or a mouse?

he's trying the joystick route thus far but I suggested to him a mouse might be easier to hack it to, use the yoke to navigate menus and the whole deal.

how would it work, start to finish, both ways?

thanks very much
Dave

I used Jude's hack.
Very easy to do. It works great and then if you still want to use it as a mouse you can use the Joymouse utility.

Hope this helps ::)

the best hack I've heard of is hacking a microsoft dual strike joystick.  why?

StarWars are analog joysticks that use 5k pots.  PC's usually use 100k pots.  But microsoft happened to come out with a controller that used 20k pots, but only rotated 1/4 of the way.  So many people have been saying that you can just plug them in and everything works great!  btw, on ebay you can get a dual strike for 9 bucks brand new.

Also, you can control starwars with a joystick.  So you shouldn't need to convert it to a mouse (then have mame convert the mouse cordinates back to a joystick reading).
