Free download for an amazingly awesome FPS
« on: July 03, 2008, 12:53:09 pm »
Very fast paced action packed first person shooter avail for free download.  The game is quite old but it still has a decent size community who play it daily. adding more people to the community would just help it that much more so heres the link check it out.

I was addicted to that game back in 1998-99.  It was definately an awesome game back in the day.

I remember seeing a couple years ago that they also released Tribes 2 for free, so you may also want to look for that.  Tribes: Vengence is also quite a bit of fun, but it's not free yet and it didn't hook me like the first two tribes games did.  The grappling hook was a great addition though.

Another great free FPS is Wolfentstein: Enemy Territory.  It's a lot more recent then Tribes and is also a brilliant and free multiplayer FPS, but your feet stay firmly on the ground, so it's really nothing like Tribes.

You should also take a look at the open beta of the game Fallen Empire: Legions, which seems to be a spirtual successor to the tribes series.  http://www.instantaction.com/

Penny Arcade turned me onto it about a week ago, although I haven't had a chance to play it much yet.  Heres what Penny Arcade said about it:
Quote
I have been trying to scam access to Fallen Empire: Legions for months, ever since the first blurry video combined an almost narcotic sentimentality for Tribes with deep mystery. Now that it's entered Open Beta, the groveling has come to a full stop. This has allowed me to fill my schedule with incredibly liberating personal flight that is punctuated by exhilarating mid-air duels.

It's Tribes, it really is, from the rolling ice terrain to the flightfeel. It doesn't have a "disc launcher," which most warriors call a Spinfusor, but their take on the RL is more than capable of filling the role for mid-air skillshots.  The plug-in that makes it all possible seems to be a Windows thing at the moment, with a version for Intel Macs currently roasting in beta. It's openly a work in progress, sturdy stock for a community driven action game drawn with reverence over an ancient frame. In time, we're certain to see classic modes like the Rabbit variants turn up. Gabe sat behind me yesterday playing it, cackling the entire time. You only have to play it for a little while to wonder what it is about the ---fracking--- ground that other developers seem to like so much. I believe that - at this late hour - we may rightly call it a fetish.

I could speak at length about it, and maybe I will at some point, but the ---fracking--- thing runs in the same browser you're using to read this text. You should go play it yourself, immediately. You won't hurt my feelings.

Well you've inspired me to load up Tribes again.  Every server seems to be playing a wierd mod, but regardless the game just didn't hold its same magic, so I was done after 30 minutes or so.

I then decided to install Tribes Vengence again and it was fun for a couple hours, but the only maps they seem to play anymore are tiny and almost completely barren of structures and vehicles.  My guess is these small fast maps are what they use in tournaments, but IMO they're no where near as fun as the large maps that shipped with the game.

Oh well.  Maybe I'll try Fallen Empire now and see if it's any good.

Never heard of it before. Downloading it now. Sounds like a fun game to play on my ancient PC. :)

I thought I'd give an update about Fallen Empire since I played it for a few hours last night.  It definately feels like a tribes game, which isn't surprising considering its made by former dynamix employees (the people who made tribes 1 and 2), but they removed so many gameplay elements that it's a rather shallow game.

Some of the things it's missing are there are only 4 different weapons(chaingun, rocket launcher, grenade launcher, and sniper rifle), there are no varying classes of armor/speed, there are no packs (like the energy or repair packs), theres nothing to destroy or repair (no inventory, sensors, or turrents), there are no deployables (such as mines, beacons, turrets, etc), and there is no command screen.

It's still just a beta, so hopefully they're going to add a lot to it before it's officially released, and it is extremely impressive that the game runs completely from internet explorer, but unless a lot of gameplay elements are added, I don't think it will have any lasting appeal for me.
