name that game
« on: June 25, 2008, 12:22:11 pm »
Always like these threads and now have the reason to create one. When i first built my cab i used to go alpha through games and check each one out (yes, it took years actually) I came across a scrolling shooter i really liked and for the life of me i cant find it again. it is possible its been removed (have games been removed from MAME?) I know i played it about 2-4 years ago. its a horizontal shooter that sometimes scrolls at an angle (alwasy forwards and to left or right ( I think). its set in mideival japan (again i think) you play as a walking guy that throws knifes or throwing stars or stuff like that, they would fan out in front of you. the Enemies are mytical stuff from Japan (and forgive me if its another asian culture, I dont know them at all). it looks very much like this companies stuff  http://www.klov.com/manuf_detail.php?manuf_id=1236&orig_game_id=6924

the thing i remeber most is you could take hits from enemy bullets and not die, it just slowly burned you down, and there was a huge amount of your and the enemies bullets(weapons) on screen. When you killed enemies they blow up into a shower of coins (the old style with a square hole in center of them). At end of stages there where bosses, the screen quit scrolling and you fought them. I seem to rember a Asian dragon was one. I also remeber the emulation would chug a bit when 2 players played and you got a ton (no exageration there where 100's of shots on screen).

Take my discription with a grain of salt, its the way i rember it, probebly not how it was.

I seem to rember the name started with a D or P and I'm pretty sure it was never released in the USA. (one of the reason i dont remeber it well, very asia name and i never played it as a kid).

this is not a Neo-geo game and you do not drive a ship/spacehip.. it is very much like Dimahoo, but Im sure it wasnt space ships/jets.. and the enmies where ground based walking..

anybody, anybody, bueller?

Ok i found it, I'm the type of guy who cant get something like this out of my mind till i figure it out. not going to post it right away as its kinda fun to try figure out .. but i want to make one correction in my discription.  The name does not start with a D or P, i was incorrect on that.

Guwange has my favorite level boss of all time. The giant spider with the cats head. Freaky!

Ok, I got one.  Been trying to find this one for years.

It was a driving game.  Looked sort of like OutRun with the view behind the car and it's aesthetics were similar (probably came out around the same time and used similar technology).

It even played similar to Outrun except you had a trigger (on the gear shift I think) and when you pulled it, the passenger of your car would hang out the window and fire his gun.  So in that respect the game was similar to Road Blasters in that you were shooting and driving at the same time.

There were really intense boss fights where you would catch up to a van or convertable and have to shoot it a whole bunch and bits of the car would break off as you shot it.  I remember there being a red life bar for the bosses.  And you could pick up a rocket launcher.

Anybody have any idea?

Wow, that's kinetic. Can you hold the fire button? or do you have to pump the button that fast? When I get home, that's definitely being added to my Mala menu :D

Too bad I don't have a vertical monitor to appreciate it correctly.

YES!  Thank you.  What an ambiguous name.  I see it's the sequel to Chase HQ... I should have been able to figure that out.
