Anyone able to cut down a trackball mounting plate?
« on: June 23, 2008, 08:26:28 pm »
So, I'm putting the finishing touches on my CP, and the brackets solution I tried to hold my trackball didn't work as expected.  I only have about 6 1/4 inch of space to mount the trackball, so a normal mounting plate wouldn't work.  Does anyone have the capability to cut a highball trackball plate down to that width, and put in new holes for the screws?  Strange request, I know.

If you want to see a poorly taken picture of my CP as it is now, here's the link.  I've fit everything into the width of a pinball machine so the pinball sims have a solid feel to them (I'm going to put lockdown bar corners on the corners).  The big sacrifice I had to make was in giving the trackball less space for mounting.

Thanks!

If you are willing to post it to the UK and don't mind just paying return postage then I can do it for you no problem.

I did just like your picture, and only put a hole in the CPO sheet (3mm aluminium in my case, but lexan will do too). I just mounted the mechanism in the bottom side of the wood panel by bending an aluminium strip in a hat-shape to press it against the aluminium sheet. No bolts visible. Just a fantastic trackball mount. Its pretty solid, you can even hit it. The mech itself will break before the mounting does I guess.

Thanks, guys.

@Franco:  I really appreciate the offer, but the shipping would unfortunately kill me.  With costs rising so much all around, I'm trying to keep the cost of the CP down.  Thanks a lot for offering, though.

@Blanka:  That's a really slick idea... I'm going to have to take a look at that.

Hopefully I'll have pictures to post soon.

That would have been the ideal way to do it, had I planned ahead for it... I already cut a hole for the trackball that wouldn't work with that... but perhaps if I can borrow a router from a friend I'll re-do the whole CP... assuming the bracket method doesn't work out.

Thanks for pointing that one out.
