Are there any really small coin mechs?
« on: June 22, 2008, 11:32:38 am »
I've been working on a "smaller than barcade" cab, in fact the project has been on hold for a couple years but I'm reviving it.  Anyways, back in the beginning I got started on a full-size machine, and in the process I got a coin mech from Ultimarc that could take tokens (or whatever).  It's just totally satisfiying, the experience of putting a coin in the machine and having it add a credit.  Well, I'd love to add a coin mech to my cab, but even though the Ultimarc one is nice and compact, it's still too big.  Anyone know if there are any really small ones?

Thanks!  For reference, here's the prototype of my cab:

Those crazy European guys use these things:

Model Number: HI-07CS

I have one similar off a megatouch. I could sell it to you if your interested. It's about this size - takes quarters.

Or do it the Computer Space way. It just used a slot, a paintbucket and and a leafswitch.

Blanka makes a great point. All a coin mech is is a device for REJECTING coins other than the ONE it's intended to not reject. So for home use, any slot that leads to a coin hitting a switch should be enough, so scratch making your own solution is very simple. (Slot, tube, switch and collection bucket)

NO MORE!!

Good points.

I enjoy the sound of hearing the quarter snake through the mech and the plunk it makes in a bin. It's one of those nice touches you don't realize you've lost till you built your cab with a credit button.

Yeah, and the coin switches are pretty cheap and easy to find.  You can just take some sheet metal that you can buy at Home Depot and give the coin a nice path to follow through so you get the clinking and clanking, but also trigger the switch.  Hell, you could make it so the coin triggers the switch, then comes out the bottom so you can use the same one over and over and over again.  ;D  Since it won't be a real coin mech, you could also make custom tokens or whatnot out of plastic if you wanted to.  It will give you plenty of choices since it won't be rejecting anything.  Have a spare beer bottle cap lying around?  Sure.  Throw that in there for a credit.   :P

That is a good point, it doesn't *need* to be a full electronic coin mech - I don't really care if it triggers when someone puts a quarter in instead of my tokens :)  (I've got a bunch of nickel 2006 BYOC tokens I got for the machine).  As for that coin mech you posted, lew, that's the exact one that I got from Ultimarc back in the day.  Nice and compact (and works with any coin you want), but still a bit big for my compact machine.  Though I guess I could make a separate coin box outside the machine, attached to the side.
