CHD games
« on: June 15, 2008, 10:30:56 pm »
What is the most economical PC I can build in order to run all/most CHD games?  I really need blitz, gauntlet legends, and the star wars games to work well...

economical PC ... gauntlet legends

What would you like to hear, that you can run these resource-hungry games on an old dusty 286 ?

Unfortunately, that just won't cut the mustard.

If you need Gauntlet Legends to run "really well", you won't achieve that goal with a thrifty budget PC.  You'll need the best PC you can afford.

NOt exactly a helpful response and after rereading it, I am pretty sure my question was pretty striaght forward. I am not sure why you thought you needed to make any assumptions about what I was thinking.

I asked what is the most economical components I would need in order to run these games.  I never implied I wanted to hear that a budget PC would do the trick.

If anyone has a particular setup that works well with most CHD games, I would love to hear about it.  I plan on buying good components, but if I can do it for $1,500 instead of $2,000 then the question was worth asking.

For Guantlet Legend and Blitz, you'd be best off just using NullDC and running the Dreamcast versions. That's what I plan to do to run MVC2 and a host of other Naomi-era arcade games, once I can afford to build an adequate dual core computer.

You need a overclocked Intel core2duo @ 4ghz+, check out my benchmark thread for more details http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=72776.0, it can be done for under $600 USD if your on a budget, have a look at the Newegg public Wish List I wiped up a few months back for a mame machine http://secure.newegg.com/WishList/PublicWishDetail.aspx?WishListNumber=7781332, the E7300 will be a better option once it's available.

Your question had two competing and incompatible goals.

If you need to have Gauntlet Legends running well, it won't be achieved in this manner :

What is the most economical PC I can build

The answer is to compromise ... do you really NEED to run every CHD game in existence ?

If you have a tight budget, that's OK, join the club   :)  ... there's plenty of (non CHD) games you'll be able to play well on a cheap PC, as long as you're realistic in your expectations.

Does SWT even run properly yet ? (an honest question since it is about the only reason I would have to move to a recent MAME build).
Working: Not Enough
Projects: Too Many
Progress: None

Taz nz, exactly what I was looking for, thanks for the post...

a porsche is economical compared to a lamborghini.  Asking for the most economical way to do something does not imply that I am trying to do anything in any manner.  I also understand that with the many different PC components, there are different ways to do things and a $600 vid card may be overkill with the type of graphics that these games utilize.
