FS: TRS-80 Model 100 computer + extras
« on: June 11, 2008, 04:50:07 pm »
EDIT: updated ebay link

Radio Shack TRS 80 Model 100 Portable Computer + extras

This thing was before my time, but has just came into my possession. It has everything pictured. What would something like this be worth in excellent condition with all of the supporting documents?

Oh, and if anyone wants to make an offer, be my guest!

For the base system with books and documentation $35- 50

With the Disk subsystem included $75 - $100 if you can find the right buyer.

I would consider it for nostalgia reasons but I have been clearing stuff out.

Once upon a time, I wrote and ran a complete BBS system which operated on a TRS-80 Model 3/4 system.

I also wrote a BBS messaging system that ran on the Model 100, of course, that was all in memory so limited to like 100 messages before the old ones scrolled.

Ah yes, we are spoiled today with our broadband......I remember the excitement when we moved from 300 to 1200 Baud!

Hmm, I happened upon one on ebay that sold for $130, and I have more stuff than them, but they had a hard case which I do not.

Any idea what the disk drive is worth by itself?

Ebay happened to the auction. I updated the link at the top, but here it is again.

Radio Shack TRS 80 Model 100 Portable Computer + extras

Apparently if you even insinuate that you would rather not receive CC payments via paypal, they nuke your auction. A simple ---smurfing--- warning and allowing me to modify the existing auction would have been nice! Is it even legal the way they force you to accept paypal if you aren't a power seller? I suppose it is since it is their playfield. Sucks though...

They don't force you to accept PayPal, but if you do take PayPal, you have to take all types of PayPal payments.

They do force you now if you are not a power seller. There was a hokey message along these lines:

"Since you do not have significant previous sales, accepting paypal is required to protect potential buyers." I don't remember the actual wording of course.

I added a line that I would prefer USPS money order, but if paying by paypal please do not use Credit or Debit cards. They killed my auction after I had 3 watchers and 1 bid. Of course, I also had to pay to relist again and 'might' get a relisting credit if the item sells.

My only question is does ebay have some sort of program that catches these things, or did some a-hole report my auction?

Ahh.  I wasn't aware of that.  That sucks...   :badmood:

I doubt eBay has a program that could catch that... my bet would be on that someone reported it...

I was gonna put a "contact me before paying" line in the relisting. I decided to leave it all off just in case it was just someone giving me a hard time. I would have been PISSED if I had to relist a 2nd time.

I'll be interested to see what you get for it because I have a similar setup boxed and in the attic. The amount of RAM in the Model 100 is important. Mine is an 8K model (minimumal RAM) and that's not quite enough to use the disk drive.

The rumor is that Bill Gates actually coded parts of the OS for this little gem of a computer.

I believe the one I have is 32k. When it boots, it shows roughly 29000 bytes free. The expansion port is empty though, so I was a little confused. From what I have read, 32k was not a factory option on the m100.

The numbers don't lie though.

Yah, that's a 32K model which is fairly uncommon. The memory is socket mounted inside the case on the motherboard (it doesn't go in the expansion bay). There are 4 chips of 8K each installed in there. You either have a very late factory model, or someone upgraded it.

It's strangly nice to be able to talk about simple 8-bit bytes again. :)

Man I wish people would just go ahead and bid! There are 16 watchers right now, but everyone is waiting to snipe. I hope someone puts in a ridiculous proxy at the end so all of the other snipes drive it to the max.  ;D

It ends tonight, so I think I'll just try to forget about it until tommorrow morning.

I always snipe. I was sniped way too many times before I started sniping myself. Then I started to get pretty good prices on things. So I started sniping for everything and never looked back. I usually set a fairly low (but reasonbly fair) snipe price and then use it for multiple auctions until I get one.

But to be honest, I've become more a "Buy it now" kind of guy because I tire of these games.

Considering the huge amount of RAM in your Model-100, and the disk drive included, I'd think you'll come out OK (whatever OK is).
