I'm using some car speakers, 6x9's, 100 watt hooked up to a pc amp/sub.

I use car-speakers too. Try to have a look at the mounting covers too. I found a Canton car set with perforated metal covers, that can be routed into the mdf easily for super neat finishing.
If you want good sound, try to make a solid total closed and glued box behind each speaker. Fill it with rockwool or something like it. So do not use the whole cabinet as sound box!
Amplifier is a bit of a pain still. I think a cheap second hand one is best. They eat the headphone signal from the pc and AC 110-240V directly. Another option is a DIY electronics kit, but I think in combination with the needed PSU it will be more expensive than that second hand amplifier.

We use the same system in our cabinets as for my first home cabinet - a 2.1 PC system. The 2 mid-range/tweeter units mount nice behind the lower marquee panel, and the sub mounts at the front, bottom, center for best acoustics, with a wired bass/volume control mounted underneath the CP or behind the PC door.

what ive got so far is a mini hifi with aux in and mic in that i could use for i system with the 2 speakers,
that i was thinking of trying in a genetic cab

ive got a 5.1 surround system with i am thinkng of using my ex golden tee cab, 2 where the original speakers are just under cp.
2 just behind where i removed the led scroller from and subwoofer cut into front panel.

for my driving cab i will use a 2.1 surround pc system.

i was going to use satalite speakers for something, but there 8ohms , or try using the cab speakers, but dunno how to set them up

Shelled 2.1 PC speakers with an externally mounted volume control.

Definitely do a subwoofer. It intensifies the gaming.

I used Logitech Z4 computer speakers that I found online for $69.00(New). I thought about using car speakers but I thought they would be to big and then I would have to buy a sub an amp and find a way to wire all this car stuff to a computer. To expensive and time consuming for me. The Z4's have a power plug and the plug to the back of the computer(speaker out) and that's it, done. The stand on the speakers is removable and they are very thin which was nice for tight places. Since the face of the speakers are flat they are easy to install perfectly flush. The Z4's sound excellent and the wired remote volume control has a bass control so you can have as much bass as you want, it also has a place to plug in headphones if you don't want to disturb others while playing. The speakers now come in black(only white when I bought them) I plan on covering the speaker panel with perforated aluminum painted black. Here are some pics of my install. Hope this helps.

I just bought these from Circuit City this week:

http://www.circuitcity.com/ccd/productDetail.do?oid=174221&cm_keycode=85&om_keycode=85

Not bad for a 2.1 system for $20 (after the $15 rebate).  Just plugged it in and ready to go.  Plus I liked the fact that the volume knobs weren't on the front of the speakers so I could just mount them flat over the speaker holes in my cabinet.  And they sound great.

Thanks for the link.  I just placed an order for my new cabinet.

+1 for simple pc 2.1 speakers.  They sound great and the woofer makes a huge difference.  I would not recommend arcade speakers for a cab.

I just bought traditional arcade speakers from Bob Roberts. 5w 8ohm. Cheap. And attached them to a $20 2.1 PC speaker system. Bass box is in the very bottom of the cab. Hacked open amplifier circuit and knob is mounted in the top, with the knob sticking up through a hole.
NO MORE!!

Not to hijack the thread, but for those of you who use car speakers, what did you do to magnetically shield these from your monitor?  Are PC speakers always magnetically shielded?

Very pleased with the sound, range, and the connectability options afforded by the remote.

This is very hard to do yourself. Shielding is done by sticking a second magnet on the back of the first. Finding the appropriate one for your speaker is very hard. The options are:
- Use the speakers far enough from your CRT
- Use them with an LCD
- Disassemble a home-cinema system center speaker. The speakers in there are (always?) shielded.

Not available anymore, but the flat speakers were very handy for mounting.

  • Yeah, owning a MAME cab only leads to owning real ones. MAME just isn't good enough. It's a gateway drug.

after looking through junk i have got, i found a small midi hifi with cd, tape radio and aux inputs, mic and head phone sockets.

i took a sorce from my ipod to the mic in on the hifi, and it works a treat without pressing buttons, and it retains the vol.
so all i need to do is mount the 2 speakers (need to remove from housing as they are to big to fit in small gap).

and do a adjustment to power button as it needs pressed to switch on.

for cab 2 i have a 5.1 surround sound system (emerson)  and 110 stepdown tranny for uk use, so i am going to try mount that ( dam speakers are big on that to)

i am going to use the sub, 2 fromt and rear speakers and missout the center speaker.

its going into a x golden tee cab, 2 behing control panel and 2 up where the britterbyte display was

If there's bees in the trap I'm catching em
By the thorax and abdomen
And sanding the stingers down to a rough quill
Then I dip em in ink, and I scribble a bit
But if it they wriggle then I tickle em until they hold still
Lemme say it again
In my land of pretend
I use bees as a mf'n pen

That is why I love the Logitec Z4 that I used, The face of the speakers is flat and the stand is removable and since the sides are flat they made for a very easy and clean install. I just cut out holes the same size, layed the speaker panel flat on the table, pushed the speakers into the holes and secured them with a few daps of caulk so I can remove them later if I have to. The speakers are perfectly flush and sound excellent.
