Neo geo thumb button... why not a pinky?
« on: June 05, 2008, 05:33:05 pm »
This may be a dumb question...  I decided on a 7 button layout with a "thumb button" for neo geo games.  So... what's the best way to map out the buttons in mame?  Do you normally just change the settings on neo geo games only?

The thumb button could just be hooked up to the same input as button 4... but, would that make it set up wierd, as in strong attacks before weak or a kick where a punch should be etc?

Like this:
   4 5 6
4 1 2 3

Could you just have a "pinky button" like this? :

4 5 6
1 2 3 4

How is this normally done?  This seems really easy but I think I may be making it harder than it is!

Thanks.

I have my ctlr file set to remap on Neo Geo games.

See this thread - http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=78362.0

Mine are set up
 123
 456
7

So that capcom games are correct by default.

The "Thumb" idea, more closely resembles the curve of Original NeoGeos... see the home controller here:

And is spot on the the arcade layout, attached below.

As I was telling someone in another thread, if you have an ergonomic Street Fighter layout like this

  23
156
4

Then you can make the seventh button a pinky and still have something close to a Neo Geo layout, like this

  237
156
4

Then you can wire button 7 to the same terminal as button 4 and you don't have to do any software configuration.  This does mean you have to use an ergonomic six button layout, which I personally decided against in my actual arcade panel because my home built control box was not comfortable with that layout, ironically enough.

How did you do that? are you using the wire harness from the U360 sticks, did u just dasiy chain button 4 and (4) 5 to one another, ie

   1234
  4(5)56

All buttons on the control panel are running through a Minipac. Only the second player stick has a harness wired in, and it's only running admin buttons hidden under the flip-up panel on the front of my CP.

As for how it was wired, you simply run the wire for button 4 to both buttons (I just ran two wires into a male crimp connector and plugged that into the button 4 female connector). I have since rewired it and made a second Mamewah system entry for only Neo Geo games in MAME, rather than using a CTLR file. My new setup is:

456
123
     7

We talked about this before.  A real easy way that will let you avoid having to mess with key mapings is:

1234
456

This way you have the 1-4 Neo style on top and the 1-3 over 4-6 Capcom style as well with no need to remap.  A lot of people do the following, but have to remap.

  123
  456
 7

I'm still on teh fence about what I want to do for my new CP, but I'm leaning towards the first one since all you have to do is wire both #4 buttons together.

It comes down to where you like your 1 button to be. I prefer to play mostly on the bottom row, and I don't care about Capcom fighters enough to care which row is punch or kick.

I'm pretty much the same except some of my friends are die-hard Capcom fans and would hang me if I switched them.
