Using original cab's speakers for a MAME conversion
« on: June 01, 2008, 07:02:33 pm »
Working on two  MAME conversions right now, both cabs have their
original speakrs.  My first cab was a scratch-build, and I used some
PC speakers so it was easy to hook up sound.  Not sure how to do
it if I try to use the speakers that are already in the cab... do you have
run them to some kind of AMP and then to the PC?

Yes, unless you have a sound card capable of amping up the output. Sometimes setting the soundcard to "headphones" makes it pump out higher volume.

If that doesn't work, use a cheap set of PC speakers, remove just the speakers and wire up the existing cabinet speakers instead.
NO MORE!!

I think there's stuff in the wiki on this. Plus, isn't some of Oscar's old stuff (like this) archived there?

I used the original speakers in my cabinet. I just taped the speaker wire to an old phono to headphone converter (see link below). Then I plugged that directly into my sound card (on board actually) and it works a treat. It's very loud, but not all sound cards are powered so yours might not work so well...
