MaLa: game selection sound issue
« on: May 31, 2008, 05:04:03 pm »
I got this set up as my game sound...

http://www.waste.org/~winkles/pik.wav (6k)

I ripped it from emumovies, then bumped the volume up about 2.5db to make it louder.  it could easily go more.

But the sound only happens when the key is released. In other words, if you move one game at a time it works fine, but if you hold the key (joystick) down in "repeat" mode, it only makes the sound once you release it. Maybe that is ideal for more lengthy sounds, but for this Tempest "pik" sound, you want to hear it each and every time. That sound is so perfect for this situation but I'm probably going to turn it back off because of this issue, which is a shame.

Loadman, any chance that this could be changed, or turned into an option, or even have MaLa automatically choose whether to do it each time based on how long the sound is?

Try this option (attached). Note: it could slow down scrolling depending on your system and the size of the wav.

Yes, that does work. It would be more ideal though if these sounds played in a different thread so as not to impact UI performance. Do you think that could be added to MaLa? If not, maybe I'll have to write a plugin to do it. ;D

Could said plugin also be responsible for playing emumovies?

the other impacting performance issue at the moment is that you can't scroll through the list until a movie has started playing, which is also a bit annoying...

@NOP
Do you use the display delay from the screenshot above? If not enable it and the scrolling with videos should be faster. If this still does not work I would check other thing in your the MaLa configuration. Normally MaLa doesn't need to start the video before scrolling to the next game in the list, depends on the display delay and other settings.

Yeah, I don't notice that problem and I have display delay turned on for avi's.

oooh! sweet.  I doubt I've done anything with that, I'll absolutely give that a shot next time I'm on the machine.  Thanks!!

Shan-

Thanks for doing that work to get the sound.  And I can go down in history as the guy who named the Tempest *pik!* sound.   ;D

I just finished up my cabinet wire management & got everything all plugged in last night.  Can't wait to turn it on, configure my 9 USB devices, do my last few PC tweaks & start playing--this task is at the top of my list!
