Check out this PC power supply
« on: June 02, 2003, 02:41:59 am »
here is a cool power supply.  It has switched outlets on the back of it.  It was designed to turn your entire computer on with one button.  I just thought some of us cabinet builders might like it more than some of the other "single button" methods of turning on their cabinet

Something similar to this showed up a while back, but it was a bit different. It wasn't cheap, though. How much is this one?

(I'm guessing at least $50.)

Hey, that is a cool find.  I would have bought this if I would have know about it sooner.

I ended up buying the power strip from Sears instead.

Looks like you can order it here:

Never heard of them, but they offer the 300 watt for $82.50 or the 400 watt for $115.50

I'm sure it does a very good job for what it does, but you have to ask yourself if turning on everything at once is worth $82 before tax.

That seems like a LOT of money. In perspective, that's more than my cabinet cost me. That's more than some people pay for a monitor.

I'd rather save the money and flip a couple switches. With a lil rewiring and hacking you could probably do the same thing for $5 or $10. Personally, I don't mind flipping 2 swicthes instead of 1.

Guys I just wanted to add something about the price of these... was that link to the price in Australian dollars or US dollars.

The website is Australian based... therefore it makes me wonder if that price was in Australian dollars???

(If it is just halve the cost in Australian dollars to find the price in US dollars)

Cheers guys!

I am not sure if that is US dollars or not, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was.  I think I paid $90 US for my power supply when I built my computer and it doesn't have those features.

Now, for my one switch solution, I only paid about $20 for the power strip from Sears and a couple dollars for the switch (you could just use a button from Happs too).

I do something like that with a circuit I designed that switches on all devices using the power led from the computer as a trigger.

It works well but it would be nice to just buy one.

I went with the powerstrip, i hacked the on off button to the original rocker switch on my space invaders cocktail, and I hacked the end of the powercable on to the end off the strip, so now it all turns on and off with one switch, but only becuase i have a pre-atx power supply. but not only one switch, the oringinal switch, and the oringinal plug in cable.

Don't forget about the "Smart Strip" found here:

http://www.bitsltd.net/smartstrip.html

It's only $30.00.  Add a cheap power supply and you're good to go.

I use this in my cab.  You press one button (your computer power button) and the strip turns on all other devices.  It works by detecting when your computer power supply begins drawing a high amount of current.  It then switches on other devices connected to "switched" outlets.  It even has "always on" outlets.  I use one of those for my marquee light.  So, the marquee light is always on, and everything else comes on with the press of a button.

I bought this switchable powerstrip:
http://www.annasys.com/moreinfo.cfm?Product_ID=580574
It was mentioned a while back on another thread.  Its kind of cheaply constructed but works ok.  The computer is plugged into the control outlet (which always has power to it) and the other outlets are automatically switched on when the computer is on.  So the speakers, monitor, and marquee light are all plugged into those.

My computer has a bios option for power up on any keystroke, which is what I use to be able to turn on everything in my cabinet with any button press on my control panel.  Then when I'm done, normal shutdown will turn everything in the cabinet off, no flicking of any switches and only one cord running out of the back of the cabinet.

These things aren't needed, but they sure are nice and handy.

bionicbadger i thinks thats the same strip i bought, but i bought mine from dalco.  I don't have a link handy though.  Dalco's site looks just like that htough.  Any way, i was curious as to whether your's ever makes noise once its powered down?  Mine seems to make this weird clicking sound.  Its very sporadic, but it almost always does it.  It will do it periodically over several hours.  Its gotten to where i have to turn off or unplug the powerstrip to get it to stop.  Its really frustrating me.  Its probably a bad strip, but i'm past the warrenty.  Sadly, it didn't even get used until a couple months after i bought it.  Just wondering if anyone else experienced anything like this with one of these strips.

Does anyone know where to find one of these power strips in Australia at all? It is the perfect solution for what I am looking for!

Mine makes some wierd clicking sounds during the power down (when the computer shuts down and the other stuff gets automatically shut off, lasts about a second or a second and a half, maybe 10 rapid clicks).  But I've never heard it it make any noise at any other times.  It works fine.

those rapid clicks, thats exactly what i'm talking about.  Mine will spontaneously do it minutes or hours later.  It'll do it constantly when it starts too.  Its really annoying.  I think i'm gonna try a different brand strip.  I seen a different strip a while back that does the same function, it was just more expensive.
