Others have, but...

a. the binary used an stolen unlicensed (to microsoft) compiler
b. needs a mod chip, also against microsoft's license
c. AFAIK, these's no current or even semi-current binary outthere
d. mameDev doesn't approve of it
e. the xbox was a p3 700mhz with slow hardware so...

I doubt it.  (maybe some neogeo and mk, if the binary is old enough, but not ki)

You don't need a mod chip to run it (there are other ways...)
It runs very well actually. KI and KI2 not too well, but the old games run fine.
It's version .84 of Mame.
It's a P3 733Mhz with 64mb or ram, so some of the bigger games don't load too well (although the latest version does use virtual memory so it helps but I have not tried it).
I was going to use it on my original cab and got an Xbox to Jamma adapter. The video worked well but the controllers did not.
I do not recommend it for a modern day cab.
Good luck!

Every single Neo Geo and CPS1/2 game will run 100% no problem.  Mame and Final Burn Alpha are both very good on Xbox and will play prety much any game that you want as long as it isn't 3d or or a special case.  Mortal Kombat will not run very well because it has advanced pretty far along in emulation and thus needs a fast computer.  There are specific emulators for KI 1 and 2 that run very well.

I would say go for it.  It would make a fine tv setup.

For TV playing it is really great (I misread the OP and thought he was going to use in a cab).
Go for it!

I have built around 9 xboxs with Mame, Final Burn Alpha, and XBMC.  I will say the xbox does a fine job playing most anything mame has to offer.  Due to the xbox's limited RAM, not all the newer games will play.  Final Burn Alpha plays 100% perfect so far.   You will need to ditch the factory Hard drive and get a bigger one if you want to hold everything.  It will also play any of the older consoles (SNES, Genesis, etc) perfect.

I bought an Xbox a few weeks ago to use as a Media PC and it works great. Mame runs almost all games on full speed (as mentioned above). If you link the box to your network you don't even need a bigger HD because you can use a partition on your PC's harddrive. I definitely like the frontend, wish there would be something like that on PC. Kawax and other emu's are also available for the Xbox.
Wish list: Galaga, Pacman, Pooyan, Star Wars cockpit, Gauntlet, Tron

Three shalt be the number thou shalt count, and the number of the counting shall be three. Four shalt thou not count, nor either count thou two, excepting that thou then proceed to three.

Due to the xbox's limited RAM, not all the newer games will play.

I know that there are hardware mods for the XBox to double the memory to allow larger Mame games to run but it involves alot of soldering but thats not for me.

My Xbox has a solderless chip installed with the drive loaded with alot of great emu's on it including MAME. The DOS emu just rules! and with Xbox Media Center it is one of the best investments I have ever made. I use it like a TiVo, moving videos over and watching them when ever I want!

Great piece of equipment to play around with if you can get by the fact that:
a. the binary used an stolen unlicensed (to microsoft) compiler

Hello..

I'm using one myself  :)

You can use usb adaptors in the controller ports.. with these an ipac will plug straight in no problem (no need to hack a controller).

I flashed the TSOP (no need for a mod chip) using one of the game save hacks,  installed a bigger hard drive (160GB when that was seen as huge), and installed everything ftp'ing from my PC.

Here is my WIP cab:

as already said: it plays all the classics. Perfect for me.

the only downside, to get trackball or spinner support (mouse support) you need special hardware that they don't sell anymore that i can find.

killer instinct xxx is what you need for xbox KI 1 and 2 to run.

KI1 runs great.

If you can find a newer version of it KI2 runs really good compared to the first versions which are real slow.
