Backspin is not cool!
« on: May 26, 2008, 10:48:42 am »
I am having backspin issues with a new TT2 spinner and my Happ USB trackball.  I want to play tempest accurately.

I have looked up all of the posts about backspin to no avail.  I have changed the sensitivity in Mame, but everyone seems to address that you need to pay attention to the mouse driver and settings as well.  Since the sensitivity in Mame helped the problem but did not eliminate it, what mouse settings in win XP should I change to eliminate this problem? Is there a new driver I should use?

I'm noticing the same problem with my TT2 playing Tempest.  I haven't had time to research it a whole lot, but I think it has to do with the OS' poll rate (I believe you need to increase it).  I haven't fooled with it myself but I know there's some info on the wiki if a better answer doesn't get posted.

I looked on wikipedia but did not find anything on poll rate.  Could you post a link to it or what term I should search for?

I'm sorry, I thought I included it.  Here's what I found on BYOAC's Wiki: http://wiki.arcadecontrols.com/wiki/Info_on_Serial/PS2/USB_Mouse_'Polling'

I didn't know about the patch that nuka mentioned.  May want to check that out first.

Thanks for the heads up on these things, guys.  I did follow the wiki article and I now have a polling rate of 250!  However, it did nothing to lessen the problem I am having.

I am running MAME 1.23u3 and I am not in a position to recompile my own code, which is what I think would be what the diff file would be used for.

Are there any mouse settings that I can adjust to help or is there anything else I can do to fix this?

I would love to have that if it doesn't have nag screens ;-)  Does anyone have access to a server temporarily for this?

I had someone upload something to rapidshare.  Does that require you pay to upload something?

Thanks for the offer nuka!

compiling is pretty straight forward. mamedev has step by step instructions, pretty hard not to succeed.

but if you're limited on drive space, here it is. it has all the compiled exe's. 10 MB

Hey, I was having the same problem in Tempest with the TT2 but a combination of the updated MAME exes and using that tool to change mouse polling to 250 seems to have fixed it.  The arcade accurate setting for Tempest with a TT2 is about 6% sensitivity(360 spin will move you 5 spaces on the first screen -I've checked this on a real machine-).  The TT2 feels absolutely perfect with that setting and a tokentop installed.

I get a blank page from that link
How does one change the polling in  XP?

EDIT never mind I found it here http://wiki.arcadecontrols.com/wiki/Info_on_Serial/PS2/USB_Mouse_%27Polling%27

Many thanks to Nuka and the rest on this msgboard.  I really appreciate you going out of your way to help.  I did change the polling and then used the new exes and now I am loving Tempest!

I Really appreciate it!

I am going to try and compile 125u4 myself.  Do I still need to add this patch or has it been added to the new update, U4?  If I need to add it, at what point do I add it?  It is my understanding that I go from the main 125 add all of the U's, U1,U2,U3,U4, then hi_125 and then do I add the spinner patch?

Thanks!
