Newbie asking about Coin Doors
« on: May 24, 2008, 04:54:39 am »
Hello,
If were to buy a coin door from Happ's, are there other parts that I would need to order ?

I am looking into this one:
http://happ.com/coindoors/40002300p.htm    what about the mechanism, the switch ?? Remember I am a newbie when it comes to this stuff.

Thanks...
   Scott

Well, it's not really a coin door, it's a plate assembly that would fit into certain model doors.  If you just want the feeling of putting in coins, without actually having an openable door, you could still use that, but it's not really meant to be a stand alone device.

To answer your question, it comes with a $.25 mech, which is the thing that actually accepts your quarters and rejects everything else, and the exploded view shows that the assembly has the microswitch on it, so it should come ready to be hooked up, but like I said it's not really a door it's a part of one.

That's not what you want. (Unless it is, but I don't know why...)

I've used them on countertops, where they work great. I've seen a couple of "real" cabs use them, but they always look a bit strange.

That's what I'm thinking as well.  If it's for a mini-cab or a bartop it would probably be fine, but it's going to look really narrow and weird on the front of a full size cabinet.  Not to mention it will restrict your ability to access things inside your cabinet from the front.

Personally, I'd go with a regular coin door if it's a full cab.  I also would look at eBay and dealers, instead of Happ, to find a used one.

I would concur with GAJoe as to using a full-size door and sourcing it used -- they're pretty easy to clean up and you can save yourself a lot of money. Consider posting a WTB in Buy/Sell/Trade.

On a related note, Zaxxon was one of the games that used these ... still looks strange to me ...

You guys are absolutely right. It does look weird on a cabinet.
Hmm... ok....I think I will look on ebay and see what I can find. About what price range should I expect a "working" coin mech be ?

Any of you wouldn't know where I could find a used cabinet in Dayton, Oh area....I have been lookin on the net but nothing really turns out !!

Thanks for your help guys....

A coin mech should sell for 5 or 10 dollars.  I've seen them cheaper in some places, way more expensive others.  Here's an auction going on now for a mech with free shipping for 9.99.  http://cgi.ebay.com/HAPP-Video-Arcade-Game-Pinball-25-Cent-Coin-Mech_W0QQitemZ200226441911QQihZ010QQcategoryZ13727QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

A used coin door, depending on its condition and brand can go for as little as 15 or 20 dollars.  Here's a fixer-upper.  You'd need to get some mechs to go with it.  http://cgi.ebay.com/Midway-Coin-Door-for-Upright-Arcade-Game_W0QQitemZ140235003020QQihZ004QQcategoryZ13718QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Here's an over-under door with mechs included, just needs locks:  http://cgi.ebay.com/Coin-Door-Coin-Mechs-Arcade-Machine_W0QQitemZ320255215429QQihZ011QQcategoryZ13718QQrdZ1QQssPageNameZWD10VQQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp1638Q2em127

These are things that you can definitely comparison shop for and find deals all over the place.  You might want to wait and see about finding a cabinet, first.  I got my coin door and my mechs with my empty cabinet.

Well,
Here's the thing.... I am looking to build a MP3 jukebox, coin operated... I am looking to build my own jukebox cabinet. I am just looking for items I need to complete my "parts list" ! :)

But you gave me enough knowledge to know what to look for. Thank you GAJoe..  But all I would need is a coin door/assembly and a mech ? No coin holder or anything like that ? I know Happ has holders under their Coin Door page.

But yes, I will look into those auctions in a bit.....Thanks so much....Man, each time I get on this site, make me want to build a jukebox and a arcade cab !! :)

Thanks again GAJoe !!!
