A button reassignment question
« on: May 18, 2008, 09:58:02 am »
Alright I have my buttons setup on my CP as follows(numbered as joystick buttons):

1,2,3,26
4,5,6

I have a forth button on top for neo-geo/SNK type of games and I also use it as a shifted coin insert.

So... on neo-geo/snk types of games which use the forth button I change the input of 26 to 4, so I have the four button configuration to use.  I have to do this on every game I use(only once) which can get annoying especially when upgrading/downgrading MAME.  Is there anyway to tell MAME that if it is a neo-geo/snk game to shift the buttons automatically.

  • Yeah, owning a MAME cab only leads to owning real ones. MAME just isn't good enough. It's a gateway drug.

When you upgrade/downgrade MAME, just copy the MAME.EXE file. Then you don't have to change your controls each time.

As for your setup, I'm kinda baffled by it.

Here's mine:

456
123
     4

I have the fourth button wired twice. The bottom row is Neo Geo (just with lower button on the other side), but I don't have to change anything in setup to play. If you're picky about Capcom fighters, you can switch the buttons in setup, since there aren't really that many Capcom fighters anyway (I don't mind the punch and kick being swapped).

all it is a fourth button on the top for neogeo style, the three bottoms are for street fighter types of games.  I liked the fourth button on top in the same horizontal axis, that's the way it was on neo-geo games I played.  Plus I didn't like the look of the fourth button offset, it looked like it was just throw in(sorry personal preference).   The kick and punch I could swap, but then it just wouldn't feel right. I was thinking maybe I could do something to avoid going into the menu each time I run across a new neo-geo game.  Also I don't want them to be assigned to the same input to avoid accidental presses.

Really aren't that many Capcom Fighters?!  You're talking about the company that took fighters to the mainstream... Theres as many or more Capcom Fighters as SNK and the Capcom ones as a whole are higher quality game for game.

SNK has a handful of really great fighters (KOF98, Mark of the Wolves, Samurai Shodown)  and a whole CRAPTON of really really crappy fighters.

ideft - What version of MAME are you running?  In mame32++ on the left side there are basically sorters for each type of arcade hardware, and you can set preferences for that entire batch.  I'm pretty sure you could do exactly what you're  wanting through this.  I know i've done similar things to all the capcom CPS2 games before.  Alternatively you could just set up the NeoGeo games as:
A, B
C, D

A decent number of Neo conversion cabs are set up like this, and it works quite well especially if you're more use to a Capcom style layout.  Also makes combos like A+C and B+D a good bit less awkward

All I meant was since he's been configuring every single game in MAME as he plays them, there's not really all that many Capcom fighters compared to how many games are in MAME.

No no no...not every single game.
I just had to setup my inputs once in the menu.  I just have to change my inputs on every neo-geo/snk game that I use.

Can you program inputs for a certain group of roms in Mame++???  Would setting the controls in mame32++ then maybe copying the cfg over to the command line version work???
