Pop from speakers on boot and shutdown
« on: May 14, 2008, 11:08:35 pm »
I get a pop from my speakers (computer speakers) from my Mame cab right when I turn the cab on and when it shuts off. Any way to address this? I have it hooked up to a smart strip. Is there any kind of inline filter that will filter this out? Not a huge deal but what the heck, would be nice if it didnt do it.

Thanks

  • Yeah, owning a MAME cab only leads to owning real ones. MAME just isn't good enough. It's a gateway drug.

Not really. Depends on the speaker type I guess and the quality of your powerstrip. I'm sure there's an electrical answer/solution, but as long as you're not blowing things, I wouldn't worry.

I think it's fairly common for speakers to pop on computer startup and shutdown, even if the speakers are always powered.  Two of my last three computers, and one of my parents' two computers pop.  I've always thought it was a speaker and/or sound card thing, as I moved my decent 2.1 speakers between the two that popped.  The only action I did was turn down the volume before shutting down, if anything.  Bugs me less than the windows startup sound (I disable that).

Are you using onboard audio?  If you and a PCI audio card around switch to that.  I have notived that my onboard audio will do it but not the PCI soundblaster.

My PCI soundblaster does it, though.

Sounds like your computer speakers are the amplified kind.  No way to stop the 'pop'.

If I plug my speakers into a pci sound card (audigy 2) they make the sound, if I plug them into the on board audio, they don't make a sound.

So my guess is that it isn't the speakers but rather the sound card.
